"I CAME BACK HAUNTED"

The child of a Rabbi who fled persecution in Czechoslovakia, Marc Spector was always a fighter. One of the hardest things for Marc to recognize was not every problem could be solved with his fists. As a young boy, he often confronted antisemitism in his home of Chicago, and would always respond by fighting back. But it was all getting to be too much to bear. So Marc split for the first time and created Steven Grant, his first alter. His father, noticing this, had Marc committed to Putnam Psychiatric Hospital. After months without successful treatment, Marc returns home to his family.

As he entered his teenage years, the divide between him and his father only grew. After his graduation from high school, Marc would moonlight as a heavyweight boxer. When his father found out, he disowned Marc. Following this, Marc would enlist in the Marine Corps. Here, he’d serve until his superiors had discovered that he lied about having not been institutionalized. For that, he was dishonorably discharged.

After the war, Marc was driftless, unsure with what to do with his memories of violence. He split once more, creating Jake Lockley.

But despite the horrors of war, Marc still wanted to fight. Illegal boxing wasn’t enough anymore. But opportunity found him in the name of a man named Raoul Bushman, and Marc joined up with him as a mercenary.

He was good at the job. Hurting people came naturally to him. During one job in Sudan, Marc Spector developed the worst thing a mercenary could: a moral compass. But it was too late for him. When he acted on it, Bushman shot Spector and left him to die.

Somewhere between life and death, or maybe in death itself, Marc Spector met Khonsu, the Egyptian God of the Moon. Khonsu came to Marc with a deal, resurrection in exchange for acting as Khonsu’s avatar and fist. Marc accepted.

Traveling to New York and donning the colors of the moon, Spector would go out at nights and fight crime as Moon Knight, protecting overnight travelers.
