Logan's memories are hazy. He doesn't remember where and when he was born, or even what his first name was. He doesn't remember the faces or names of his parents. He doesn't remember anything from his childhood. His earliest splashes of memory come from violence. The where and why he doesn't remember, only that he's hard to kill, and that makes him dangerous.
Some time in his past, Logan was abducted by the Weapon X program in order to be turned into a weapon. They leveraged Logan's healing factor in order to subject him to the Adamantium Bonding process. Unbeknownst to Weapon X, however, Logan hid another mutation. Each of his hands held three identical claws as a part of his skeletal structure. As the unbreakable metal bonded to his bones, they also coated his claws, turning them razor sharp.
Logan doesn't remember much of what happened under the control of Weapon X. He knows that he was used as their weapon, but he doesn't quite know what they did to him
His earliest stream of memories is the aftermath of his escape. He's in the Canadian Wilderness, alone. The taste of blood is in his mouth but he doesn't know if it's his blood or someone else's blood. There are knives coming out of his hands. He has to run, because it's not safe here.
It was in the Canadian Wilderness that he was discovered by Department H, the Canadian government's branch relating to superhuman activities. As he began to recover psychologically, Logan would do dirty-work for the Canadian Government. One such mission saw him facing down the Incredible Hulk.
When he was offered to lead Canada's premier superhero team, Alpha Flight, a man in a wheelchair came to him with a counter offer. His name was Charles Xavier, and he informed Logan that he was a Mutant, and offered him a place on his own superhero team, the X-Men. Logan elected to join the X-Men, and took up the codename of Wolverine.
In the coming years, Wolverine would find himself becoming a better and more noble man. Where he was once the loose canon of the team with a hair-trigger temper, he slowly came to accept the X-Men as a family, to the point of having become a surrogate father to more than a few younger members, and would become the one of their finest heroes on the team. However, Logan is acutely aware of the fact he lives in a world that fears and hates him, so when people threaten Mutants, Wolverine will not hesitate to bare his claws and protect them.

CANON
[Logan is canon divergent and headcanon based. The majority of his characterization comes from the works of Chris Claremont; Barry Windsor-Smith; Larry Hama; Greg Rucka; Rick Remender; and Benjamin Percy. In addition, I am treating the Marvel Vs. Capcom series as canon to my portrayal of Logan]
[I am actively ignoring the love triangle between Scott, Logan, and Jean, along with his Avengers membership + his allegiance in AvX; anything written by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, or Daniel Way; his feud with the Punisher; and Logan regaining the memories of his past. He has some bits and pieces, but he does not have and never will have the full story]
WOLVENOM
Fury was a goddamn bastard, getting Logan to get his dirty work like that. Worse yet, he was taking an alien and not only forcing it to be the personal weapon of the United States Military, but having SHIELD torture the damn thing so they can find out how to kill it. Gutting him was very tempting, but Fury was smarter than that. The hosts died off soon enough, but the creature needed something new to latch onto. Logan had proved himself as a more than adept survivor, he would do quite nicely. It lies dormant in him for years, only waking up when Magneto rips the metal out of his body. This, as Logan would discover, is a Symbiote. Though they've had their arguments in the past, they've learned to (mostly) fight as one now. One thing's for sure though, the bud guys sure do piss themselves whenever they face him.
