Jason Peter Todd was born onto the streets of Gotham City, as the son of Willis Todd and Sheila Haywood. To say that Jason had a tumultuous upbringing would be an understatement. His father going to prison and his mother overdosing didn't help matters either, and Jason learned to live off the streets of the city. He subsisted from stealing hubcaps and selling them for profits. Life wasn't good, far from it, but he was surviving and that was enough for most days. One night, Jason found himself stealing the hubcaps of the Batmobile... and was confronted by the Batman. Jason was expecting a fight. The last thing he expected was to be brought into the Batman's cave, and made a part of his family. He would learn that Batman was really Bruce Wayne, and Jason was adopted into this family. Shortly after that, he became the second boy to wear the colors of Robin. But despite a purpose and family, he was left discontent. He was angry at the world for how cruel it could be. He found a ray of hope when he learned that his mother was alive in Ethiopia, and journeyed alone to meet her.
He was betrayed by her, who took him to the Joker. Jason was brutalized by the Joker and beaten with a crowbar. The crescendo was a ticking time bomb. On April twenty-seventh, Jason Todd was murdered by the Joker. He was only fifteen.
Two years later, Jason would be dunked in the Lazarus Pit, and rise from the grave. He wasn't given much information from Talia Al Ghul, only the phrase "You remain unavenged." Jason would learn the truth, that Batman let the Joker live. Enraged, Jason dedicated himself to taking his teachings from Batman to the next level, to kill when he had only learned how to subdue. The revelation that Bruce had taken on a third Robin, one Timothy Drake, had only made matters worse, leading Jason to the conclusion that he was never a son of Bruce's, only a replaceable asset. After briefly helping Tommy Elliot and Edward Nygma with their plan to strike against Bruce Wayne, Jason decided he needed to act on his own, and fight both Batman and crime.
Jason fashioned a makeshift Batsuit, and began storming the Gotham City underworld as a new and lethal Batman. Through his actions and his garb, he would garner the attention of both the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince of Crime. And his endgame for all three of them is yet to be fully realized...

CANON
[This is a very canon divergent take on Jason Todd]
[The greatest canon divergence is that he never takes on the identity of Red Hood. Instead, he is actively impersonating Batman]
[Jason's primary characterization comes from Batman: Under the Red Hood with elements also taken from Red Hood: The Lost Days; Batman: Arkham Knight: Genesis; and minor elements of Batman: Battle for the Cowl]
[Regarding the events of Batman: Under the Red Hood, I primarily defer to the animated film but include moments from the comics that weren't a part of that animated film]
[Jason Todd is a deeply traumatized young man with none of the tools to properly deal with or address his trauma. His characterization will reflect this]
BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE
His name is Jason Todd. He's only thirteen years old. The streets of Gotham threaten to envelop him. Luckily for Jason, being at the wrong place at the right time gives him the chance of a lifetime. Stealing the hubcaps off the Batmobile led Jason into the home of Bruce Wayne, and he would learn that the billionaire is the vigilante known as Batman. And Batman has a job offer for Jason. Before Jason knows it, he's side-by-side with Batman. He's Robin: the Boy Wonder!
His name is Jason Todd. These are the best two years of his life. These are the last two years of his life.
RED RONIN
That night, Jason's prey was the Reaper. Under any normal circumstance, they would have gotten along well. But the Reaper's plans caused the senseless deaths of innocent people. Men and women, just living their lives. It should have been like any other night, but it didn't sit right. The reason would be uncovered once Jason, still calling himself Batman, killed and unmasked the Reaper.
The Reaper was an old man. Maybe he was in his sixties or maybe he was pushing seventy. But Jason realized that was the path he was on. Anger and rage and killing for the rest of his life. He got a glimpse into his future and he didn't like what he saw.
Leaving Gotham without saying a word was easy enough. And he knew how to not be found if he didn't want to. Jason didn't have a destination in mind. But he knew what he was after: healing. The journey wasn't easy, and he wouldn't say he found enlightenment by any stretch of the definition. But what he found was the ability to move on. He found the second chance he didn't know he needed: a second chance to live his life.
But there is still good to do in the world, even if it means breaking the rules to get it all done. Fashioning new gear and a new costume, Jason left his days of trying to be something he never was behind. Batman has certain qualities Jason doesn't have and never would have. But he knows what he can be: he can be the guy who fills the cracks Batman can't. He can be the guy who goes the places Batman can't if it means keeping his hands clean. He can be Batman's wayward student, his ronin.
[Jason is in his mid 20s in this AU]
