In Germany, during the height of the Great Depression, there was a child named Max Eisenhardt. Born Jewish, he would experience fear and hatred unlike anything else. Following Kristallnacht, the Eisenhardt family would attempt to flee to Poland. They were captured and sent to the Warsaw Ghetto, where they would try to escape again. But this time, Max’s entire family would be executed. Max only survived by some miracle, and hid in the mass grave his family was buried in. But he was found, and sent to Auschwitz. There he became a Sonderkommando. Max would eventually find escape with his childhood love, Magda, and take on the new name of Erik Lehnsherr after the war had ended.
However, Erik's life would not be free of persecution. While living with Magda, Erik would discover that he has power over magnetism, and use these powers to save Magda and his daughter, Anya, from a burning home. He would find himself attacked by the KGB, and unable to save Anya. When Erik killed his attackers, Madga fled from him, and Erik would find himself alone once more.
Erik would find himself in Israel, volunteering at a psychiatric hospital in Haifa. It was here where he would meet Charles Xavier, and the two would become fast friends. Charles and Erik often found themselves debating Mutant coexistence among the humans. Erik would part ways with Charles once he realized that he and Xavier held incompatible world views.
Erik would try once more to work on the side of righteousness, aiding Western Intelligence agencies in apprehending Nazi War Criminals. He would find himself betrayed by his handlers, and decided that he must take actions in his own hands.
Erik would announce himself to the world as Magneto, a Mutant Terrorist who would declare war on the governments of the world. He would be labeled a villain by those in power, and frequently find himself in conflict with the X-Men, banded together and led by his old friend Charles Xavier. Though Magneto has aligned himself with the X-Men as the occasion called for it, nevertheless he remains a villain in the eyes of some. A fate Erik is content with, for his actions are all performed in the name of protecting Mutantkind from the horrors which he believes man will inflict upon Mutants if Mutantkind will not protect themselves first.
