If you want a lightweight, portable solution for travel with exceptional battery longevity, choose Maxell 190400; if you need premium materials, superior sound isolation, and high-fidelity audio clarity, choose SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS.
• Maxell 190400: Best for long-haul travel and commuters who prioritize over 50 hours of continuous playback on standard batteries, though it lacks the plush comfort of memory foam.
• SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS: Ideal for audiophiles and professionals seeking studio-grade sound quality and memory foam ear cups, but with a shorter battery life per charge cycle.
• Who is each pick for?: The Maxell is perfect for the frequent flyer or bus rider needing reliability without charging cables, while the SOUL fits the music lover demanding pristine audio detail and a luxurious fit for small ears.
The Maxell 190400 stands out as a dedicated utility tool for anyone spending significant time in transit. Its most defining feature is the massive power reserve provided by its two AAA batteries. While many modern wireless headphones require daily charging, this wired model promises over 50 hours of use on a single set of standard batteries. This isn't just a marketing claim; it is a practical reality that means you can pack these headphones for a week-long trip without ever hunting for an outlet. For the traveler who lives out of a carry-on, this eliminates the anxiety of a dead battery mid-flight.
Design-wise, the Maxell leans heavily into portability. The folding mechanism allows the unit to collapse into a compact shape that fits easily into a bag or even a large pocket. It comes with a travel pouch and a dual-prong adapter specifically designed for airline entertainment systems, signaling that this device was engineered with the airplane cabin as its primary battlefield. The active noise cancellation technology, known as Noisebuster, uses microphones to detect ambient drone and generate an anti-noise wave. In my analysis of the specs, this system effectively reduces up to 95% of pervasive environmental noise, making quiet genres like soft jazz or classical music audible even when jackhammers are running outside or engines are roaring overhead.

However, this focus on function comes with trade-offs. The build material is primarily plastic, which feels durable but not luxurious compared to competitors using metal or higher-grade composites. The ear placement is over-ear, which provides good coverage, but the lack of memory foam suggests the seal might not be as comfortable for extended wear sessions compared to softer alternatives. Furthermore, because it relies on a wired connection via a mini-phone jack, you are tethered to your source unless you use a separate Bluetooth transmitter. This makes it less convenient for spontaneous listening but ensures zero latency and zero pairing issues. It is the best clip-on style option for those prioritizing endurance over luxury, especially if you have smaller heads where bulky headbands might feel tight after an hour.
If your priority shifts from battery endurance to sonic fidelity and tactile comfort, the SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS is the clear contender. This headphone is marketed toward music professionals, DJs, and serious aficionados who demand a "high definition" listening experience. The key differentiator here is the construction of the ear cups. Unlike the standard padding found on budget models, the SL300MS utilizes memory foam combined with silicone and plastic. This combination creates a full ear cup articulation that conforms to the shape of your head, providing a custom seal that is crucial for both comfort and effective noise isolation.
For buyers with small ears, this design is particularly compelling. The memory foam cushions offer a soft, yielding barrier that distributes pressure evenly, preventing the "clamping" sensation that often plagues over-ear headphones on narrower head sizes. The frequency response range of 20Hz to 20,000Hz indicates a balanced approach to sound reproduction, aiming for the pristine, detailed output required for critical listening. Whether you are mixing tracks or simply enjoying the nuance of a live recording, the dynamic drivers in this unit are tuned to deliver sound that moves your soul rather than just filling the air with noise.
The trade-off lies in the connectivity and power management. Like the Maxell, this is a wired device featuring a standard 3.5mm jack, meaning you cannot use it wirelessly without an external dongle. However, the active noise cancellation system here is paired with a more robust audio processing setup intended for professional use. The controls include media control functionality, allowing you to manage playback directly from the ear cup, which adds convenience during a workout or commute. While the battery life specifications suggest a shorter operational window compared to the Maxell's AAA-powered beast, the enhanced materials and superior sound signature make it worth the swap for those who value audio quality above all else. It is one of the best extra bass earbuds for small ears in terms of how well the enclosure seals low frequencies without causing discomfort.
• Best for battery life → Maxell 190400: With over 50 hours of playback on two AAA cells, it wins hands down for long trips where charging is impossible.
• Best for comfort and small ears → SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS: The memory foam ear cups provide a softer, more adaptive fit that prevents pressure points.
• Best for sound isolation → SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS: The full ear cup articulation and memory foam create a tighter acoustic seal for better passive isolation.
• Best for travel convenience → Maxell 190400: Includes a specific airline adapter and folds down smaller for easy storage in a carry-on.
• Best for audio fidelity → SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS: Engineered for professionals with a wider frequency response and balanced sound profile.
• Best for durability of materials → SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS: Uses a mix of silicone and memory foam for a premium feel versus the all-plastic construction of the Maxell.
• Best for simplicity → Maxell 190400: No complex electronics to fail; just plug in, insert batteries, and listen.
• Best for versatility → SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS: Media controls on the ear cup allow for easier management of playback without reaching for your phone.
I would buy the SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS if I were looking for a pair of headphones for myself, specifically because I prioritize comfort and sound quality over raw battery longevity. The inclusion of memory foam ear cups makes it the superior choice for clip on earbuds for small ears, as it solves the common issue of painful clamping without sacrificing the seal needed for noise cancellation. While the Maxell is a marvel of engineering for travelers who never stop moving, the SOUL offers a more immersive and luxurious listening experience that justifies its presence in a home or office environment. If you want the absolute best sweatproof wireless earbuds for small ears, neither of these fits that exact category perfectly as they are wired, but for pure over-ear performance, the SOUL is the winner.
Yes, both models are over-ear designs, but the SOUL by Ludacris SL300MS is generally better suited due to its memory foam ear cups which adapt to smaller head shapes more comfortably than the rigid plastic cups of the Maxell.
The Maxell uses its patented Noisebuster technology to cancel up to 95% of ambient noise by generating an anti-noise wave, while the SOUL relies on a combination of active cancellation and a physical seal created by its memory foam ear cups.
No, the Maxell 190400 runs on standard AAA batteries, which are widely available and not included in the box, offering a significant advantage in terms of cost and availability compared to proprietary rechargeable packs.
Both headphones support wired connections via their respective jacks (Mini-phone for Maxell, 3.5mm for SOUL), making them compatible with most devices, though the SOUL's higher fidelity might be preferred for immersive media consumption.
