Narrative design and mechanic design
The goal was to make a game that used a unique perspective for the player. The protagonist uses echolocation, and slowly regains vision throughout the game while also uncovering a bloody mystery about his mother.
Challenges included writing a surreal story that communicates well to the player during gameplay.
Initial ideas for surreal stories wound up too nonsensical when designing fitting gameplay, as most puzzles/progression points had to use logic to make sense to the player.
I realized the core mechanic should support the story rather than obscure it, which led to the idea of using echolocation along with the progressive regaining of normal vision, along with a psychological horror theme.
