MAVTI Training Events

MAVTI conducts approximately 25-30 training events annually statewide for law enforcement, police academy recruits, insurance SIU, and State of Michigan regulatory personnel.  All MAVTI training events are free of charge and have been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds.

MAVTI Training Coordinator/ Lead Instructor/ Subject Matter Expert retired D/Sgt. Kyle McPhee, Michigan State Police (1989-2020) has instructed vehicle theft related investigative training courses since 1998 to over 12,000 law enforcement officers, police academy recruits, Insurance SIUs, and regulatory personnel in Michigan, Ohio, and the Country of Norway.

MAVTI is currently scheduling training events for the 2022-23 fiscal year. Any agency that would be interested in hosting a FREE MAVTI MCOLES registered training event is requested to contact Kyle via email at

MAVTI currently instructs the following MCOLES registered training courses:

Investigation & Forensic Identification of Stolen Automobiles (Road Patrol based training (4hrs)

Basic Police Academy VIN course (2-4 hrs.)

Investigation & Identification of Stolen Heavy Equipment and Watercraft (4hrs)

Investigation & Identification of Stolen Off-Road Motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs,  Snowmobiles & Scooters (4hrs)

 LEIN Electronic Insurance Verification (EIV) Overview/ Counterfeit Proof of Insurance Certificate Recognition (2.5hrs)

Chemical VIN Restoration School (8 hrs)

**Most MAVTI training events are four hours in length; however, all courses can be customized to shorter lengths**
