Tech Help for Seniors

Peter

Walters

Are you tired of being treated like an old fool when you want help with your computer, phone or tablet?

I've loved playing with, and learning about, computers and electronic gadgets since I first started working on IBM PCs in the 1980s. What I love more is helping people.

You deserve to be treated with respect, patience, and a sense of humour.

Your privacy and security are my priorities.

I want to help you learn how to use your gadgets, and solve those little problems that can frustrate us all.

So how does this work?

Send me an email at peter@peterwalters.ca

We'll set up a time for me to phone you, and we can talk.

I won't charge you for that first conversation.

If I don't think I can help you, I'll be clear about that, and suggest what you might do instead.

If I think I can help you, we'll figure out the best way. I can come to your home if you're in the Greater Victoria area, but only if you're comfortable with that.

I charge $25 an hour, which includes GST. If I can't fix your problem, I won't bill you.

What kind of gadgets do you work with?

I usually work with Apple products, like their desktop computers, laptops, iPads, iPhones. But I'm also familiar with Windows PCs and laptops, and Android phones and tablets.

If you're not sure what you've got, that's not a problem. We can figure it out.

What can you do for me?

Walk You Through the Basics

Maybe your family has given you a new gadget, or you've bought one for yourself. I'll walk you through the basics of using it, at your pace, focusing on what's important to you.

And scams. We should definitely talk about scams.

General  Problem Solving

Tech usually doesn't work the way we expect it to, and sometimes doesn't work at all.

Problem solving is my favourite thing.

Set You Up For Video Conferencing

Have you wanted to Zoom or FaceTime with friends and family? I can help you set that up and show you the basics.

If you're already video conferencing, I can show you ways to look and sound better.

Show You How to "Back Up" So You Don't Lose Photos and Documents

We can talk about your back-up options, the pros and cons of storing your photos and documents "in the cloud", and what you'll need to do that.

Make Simple Websites

I can help you set up simple "free" websites for your family or club, using Google Sites. Sites as simple as this, or a little more complex, like this one: peterwalters.ca . (If you go to that site, you'll see my background and what else I do. I do tech stuff as my passion, which is why I don't charge much.)

Turn Your Old Laptop Into a "Chromebook"

If your old laptop (or desktop) is running an outdated version of Windows, I might be able to turn it into the equivalent of a Chromebook using a free program called Chrome OS Flex. We can talk about what a Chromebook is, and why you might want to do that. And why not.

What don't you do?

I don't take apart your computer or gadget. I'll do that with my own toys, but I'd rather you trust that kind of work to a computer shop with the proper equipment.

I don't want to know your passwords. I do want to help you protect them.

I don't try to sell you stuff.

What are your hours?

I'm pretty flexible. Email me at peter@peterwalters.ca, and I'll get back to you in 24 hours.

How do I pay you?

I'll happily take cash, e-transfers (I can explain that, too) and in a pinch, cheques. My strata doesn't allow chickens, so I have to rule those out.
