I will be resigning from my position of astronomer with tenure at the NSO/AURA on Fri 9 March. Since 2012, AURA's relocation of the NSO, and the policy surrounding that relocation, has forced me to choose between honoring my commitment to my family in Tucson or continuing my career with the NSO/AURA. It's not rocket science -- it's a simple decision that every spouse and parent can understand – I’ll be staying in Tucson.
I'm grateful to have found an opportunity to apply the skills I learned during my years at the McMath-Pierce Solar Facility and recently with Citizen CATE Experiment. I’ll be starting a new career in the unique technical and financial environment provided by a job in the defense industry. I'm looking forward to solving an exciting set of problems with a new group of colleagues.
I had a strong interest in astronomy for many years before my first undergraduate astronomy job at Caltech’s BBSO in 1985. I will be finishing several tasks during the next few weeks, but you can be sure that my interest and activity in astronomy will continue long after my NSO position ends. -- Matt Penn, 30 Jan 2018, Tucson AZ
