Matt McIlmoyl is a registered nurse, educator, and author with more than 20 years of experience in acute psychiatric nursing.
Throughout his career, Matt has worked alongside nurses at every stage, from students taking their first uncertain steps into practice to experienced professionals navigating some of the most challenging moments of their careers. As a nursing educator, he has developed a particular passion for helping new nurses build the confidence, resilience, and perspective that aren't always taught in nursing school.
His book, Becoming the Nurse You Needed, grew out of the lessons he wishes someone had shared with him when he was starting out. Rather than focusing on how to perform nursing tasks, the book explores the human side of becoming a nurse: navigating mistakes, difficult colleagues, criticism, boundaries, self-doubt, workplace culture, and the gradual process of finding confidence in the profession.
Becoming the Nurse You Needed became an Amazon bestseller and reached #1 in multiple nursing categories, including Nursing Issues, Mental Health, and Nursing Education.
Matt's work is grounded in a simple idea: we don't just need to prepare nurses to survive the profession. We need to help them become the kind of nurses, colleagues, and mentors they once needed themselves. You can follow Matt at @nursinginstructormatt on YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook.
