SUDDENLY LAST NIGHT

KNOWN MERCHANT IS DEAD

Was Born in Goshen and Was One of

City’s Most Widely Known Residents

Charles Kohler, 73 years old, former mayor of Goshen and one of the oldest retail merchants of the city, died suddenly at six o’clock last evening at his home, 101 North Third Street. Mr. Kohler had been suffering from hardening of the arteries for the past year, but his sudden death was caused by angina pectoris.

Mr. Kohler was born in Goshen, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Kohler, and lived in this city all of his life. He was widely known as a clothing merchant, and had been in business here for many years as a member of the firm of Shoup & Kohler. When that firm was dissolved several years ago he continued in business with his grandson in a firm known as Kohler & Champion.

Mr. Kohler had been actively interested in politics nearly all of his life, and served as city councilman for fourteen years, from 1886 to 1898 and from 1900 to 1902. In 1906 he was elected mayor of Goshen on the democratic ticket and served four years. He had also been interested in the fire department of the city, and served as a volunteer fireman from 1875 to 1906. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the M. W. of A.

Surviving Mr. Kohler are his, wife, Mrs. Della Kohler, a daughter, Mrs. Will Champion and a grandson Charles Champion

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home. The Rev. Har1ey F. Stuckman, pastor of the First Brethren church, will officiate and interment will be made In Oak Ridge cemetery.
