Research

• Food Citizenship in Chattanooga (Spring 2019)
  • This project aims to identify suitable locations for expanding or building new community gardens in the Chattanooga area. Sites which would address food deserts and better-serve marginalized communities would be prioritized. This study utilizes interviews with community garden managers and stakeholders to acquire an understanding of the expressed needs of their community, as well as GIS technology to address environmental factors such as soil quality, site history, and sustainability.
• Compulsory Illness: Disparate Exposure of Tennessee Schoolchildren to Vehicular Pollution (Fall 2018)
  • A GIS analysis of Tennessee’s public schools and high-volume roadways found that racial and economic disparities exist in childhood exposure to vehicular traffic-related pollution.
• Localized Food without Local Ingredients (Fall 2018)
  • A network of local food exchanges among food retail outlets within the city of Chattanooga, TN, was created to answer the question: How do food retail spaces generate authenticity and meaning in their utilization of local branding? Co-authored with UTC professor Dr. Shawn Trivette.
• Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures: Environmental Justice and Academic Performance (Spring 2018)
  • GIS project and research paper investigating how racial and economic disparities in air pollution affect the academic performance of K-8 students in Hamilton County, TN. Secondary federal and state data were used to look at race, class, toxic risk and standardized test scores among 62 schools. Findings indicate that schools with higher minority student populations tend to experience more toxic air pollution, higher cancer and respiratory risks, and reduced academic performance.
• Food Scarcity: A Growing Concern for College Students (Fall 2017)
  • Three-part blog series covering food scarcity among college students, why it occurs, and the ways in which it may be overcome. This project presents extensive research on the social and economic factors that make food scarcity among college students a social inequality. We tackle the subjects of rising tuition costs, minimum wage, and food stamps with the data to support our argument. Co-authored with student peer Miranda Wilder.
• Bioengineering: A Solution to Growing Food Insecurity Abroad (Spring 2017)
  • PowerPoint for my scientific writing presentation on advancements in bioengineering technology. These developments now allow for large quantities of food to be produced in areas that have previously shown low agricultural productivity. The findings of my research present an argument for the use of genetically-modified crops in undernourished developing nations.
• Lichen Communities Indicate Pollution in Chattanooga's Watersheds (Spring 2017)
  • Ecological survey using lichens as bioindicators of air pollution. We hypothesized that lichen populations would increase in frequency at further intervals from nearby traffic. We visited three watershed sites in Chattanooga and systematically surveyed crustose and foliose lichens. Our results indicated that lichen communities exhibit a response to the proximity of road pollution. Co-authored with student peer Angelique Peterson.
