The Measurement Mountains are where some of the first Mathland people started doing math. The mountains sit in the center of Mathland and can be seen from any point in these lands of math! There are three mountains: The Customary Cat, The Majestic Metric, and The Mystical Mixed. Most people who still live in the mountains live on the Customary Cat or The Majestic Metric. From time to time they may move from one to the other using the Mystical Mixed as a way to go in between the two. Because most of the population live on the Customary Cat and Majestic Metric this page focuses on those two.
The Mathland Converters are the characters that we use to help teach us the Strategy to be successful on the Measurement Mountains! They work on each of them because they are that awesome!
BIGGIE SMALLS: Biggie Smalls comes to work when you are converting big units of measure into small units of measure. The operation he uses is multiplication!
# of Big units (x) unit relationship = # of small units
(BxR=S)
SMALLIE BIGS: Smallie Bigs comes to work when you are converting small units into big units. The operation he uses is division!
# of small units (/) unit relationship = # of big units.
(S/R=B)
Measuring Liquids (Capacity)
Gallons
Quarts
Pints
Cups
Fluid Ounces
Measuring Weight
Tons
Pounds
Ounces
Measuring Length
Miles
Yards
Feet
Inches
In Customary Measurements you have to know each unit in each kind of measurement (capacity/weight/length). You have to know which is the big units and which are the small units.
Measuring Liquids (Capacity)
Liters
Measuring Mass
Grams
Measuring Length
Meters
In the metric system there are prefixes that describe the kind of units above. Each unit above use the same prefix and each prefix represents an amount of the units above.
Kilo = 1000 units (Big Units)
Hecto = 100 units
Deca = 10 units
Unit: Liter/Gram/Meter = 1 Unit
Deci = (0.1) of a unit
Centi = (0.01) of a unit
Milli = (0.001) of a unit) (Small Units)
Example: Kilometer = 100 meters
How can you remember all these prefixes? Just think about how the King of The Majestic Metric Mountain died...
Using The Mathland Converters means you need to know the relationships between units.
Customary Relationships
Capacity
1 Gallon = 4 Quarts (relationship 4)
1 Quart = 2 Pints (relationship 2)
1 Pint = 2 Cups (relationship 2)
1 Cup = 8 Fluid Ounces (relationship 8)
Length
1 Mile = 5280 Feet (relationship 5280)
1 Mile = 1760 Yards (relationship 1760)
1 Yard = 3 Feet (relationship 3)
1 Foot = 12 Inches (relationship 12)
1 Foot = 36 Inches (relationship 36)
Weight
1 Ton=2000 Pounds (relationship 2000)
1 Ton=32,000 ounces(relationship 32k)
1 Pound = 16 ounces (relationship 16)
Metric Relationships
Capacity = Liters / Mass = Grams / Length = Meters
All Metric relationships are based on 10s (just like our place value system!). Remember K H D U D C M and count the skips between units to get the relationships.
King Henry Died Unusually Drinking Chocolate Milk
Kilo Hecto Deca Unit Deci Centi Milli
Each skip is a power of 10: 2 skips is 10 x 10
1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (relationship 100 -2 skips-)
1 Centimeter = 10 Millimeters (relationship 10 -1skip-)
1 Kilogram = 1000 Grams (relationship 1000 -3skips-)
If you have 8 gallons and you want to know how many quarts there are in those gallons you use The Converters! Gallons are bigger than quarts so you will use Biggie Smalls and his Multiplication skills!
8 gallons = _________ quarts
8 gallons x relationship 4 (4 quarts in a gallon) = 32 quarts
