Recherche

Mes travaux de recherche portent sur l’évolution de la biodiversité au sein des environnements, avec pour modèle les fourmis. L’évolution repose, entre autres mécanismes, sur la production et la sélection de nouveaux phénotypes. Ainsi, j'explore deux questions principales : quels sont les mécanismes développementaux et évolutifs permettant la production de nouveaux phénotypes, et quelles sont les pressions environnementales facilitant leur émergence et leur sélection. En particulier, je m'intéresse à l'anthropisation et l'urbanisation. L’utilisation du modèle insecte social ajoute un niveau de complexité puisqu’au-delà des phénotypes individuels, la vie en groupe et les phénotypes coloniaux jouent un rôle crucial.

Les fourmis comprennent environ 16 000 espèces qui occupent une vaste gamme de niches écologiques. Deux raisons de ce succès sont 1/ la vie en société et 2/ le système de castes femelles (principalement généré par plasticité phénotypique) associé à une division des tâches efficace. En plus des deux castes ancestrales (reines ailées et ouvrières sans ailes), de nombreuses espèces de fourmi ont évolué de nouvelles castes telles que les reines aptères et les soldats. Les reines sans ailes sont une réponse à des pressions de sélection contre la dispersion à longue distance et la fondation solitaire des colonies. Quant aux soldats, elles permettent une meilleure efficacité des colonies en termes de défense, stockage de nourriture et fourragement. De plus beaucoup d’espèces ont évolué une diversité de taille et de forme au sein de la caste ouvrières. Les processus développementaux, écologiques et évolutifs (notamment sous l'action de la sélection naturelle) qui ont mené à cette diversité sont peu connus. Je les étudie sur des modèles tels que Mystrium, Temnothorax et Myrmecina avec une approche intégrative se focalisant sur la morphologie, la physiologie, le comportement, le développement, l’écologie et la génétique des populations. Mes travaux combinent approches de laboratoire et de terrain incluant des expérimentations en milieu semi-naturel.

Un accent particulier est mis sur l'étude de l'adaptation aux milieu anthropisés et des mécanisme de robustesse et résilience des sociétés face aux stresses et changements environnementaux.

Nos travaux sont actuellement financés par l'ANR SOGENANT.
