The main aim of Mic Seminars is to bring together young mathematicians from different universities. It provides an informal context to share knowledge and ideas, and to build social networks within the different mathematical communities.
Abstract: In this seminar we explore variational approaches to topological singularities in two dimensions, centered on the Ginzburg-Landau functional. We will detail the 'core radius approach' as a framework for analyzing these singularities. In the final part of the talk, we will introduce the classical XY model on lattices to discuss how this discrete spin system captures analogous topological phenomena and relates to the underlying continuous theory.
