If, for example, you and your significant other wanted to split a MasterClass subscription with the Duo plan, you could boost your creative writing skills with five writing courses (I recommend Neil Gaiman, Malcolm Gladwell, and Margaret Atwood) and your significant other with five cooking classes. $180 for ten courses is $18 per course, which is still a steal in my opinion.

You can always upgrade or downgrade your subscription at a later date. Start with a realistic plan and go from there. The best part is, no matter which subscription plan you choose, MasterClass gives you unlimited access to all their courses. If you recently finished binging Game of Thrones, sign up for MasterClass and binge some Martin Scorsese or Jodie Foster filmmaking courses instead.

Each playlist is a curation of short clips from a variety of courses around a particular subject. For example, there is a playlist called Total Wellness by RuPaul, Matthew Walker, Jon Kabat-Zinn and more. There is another called The Best of Anna Wintour by, well, Anna Wintour.

Skillshare, unlike MasterClass, is geared toward beginners. If you are looking to get into programming, for example, there are thousands of courses available on Skillshare to dive in and begin learning from scratch.

Nevertheless, Udemy touts a much more niche topic approach where students can learn specific technical skills from less-famous but still highly-qualified specialists. Course discovery is a bit tricky since some topics have hundreds of video courses alone. Take writing classes, for example, MasterClass has a dozen or so taught by successful people like Judy Blume, Neil Gaiman, and Margaret Atwood. Udemy offers hundreds of much cheaper writing classes but from less-known authors.

Coursera offers courses from world-leading universities, not celebrity instructors. With a more traditional learning experience, Coursera has the upper hand compared to MasterClass. However, Coursera is geared toward more professional users looking to build skills in their profession and receive actual Degrees and Certificates by doing so.

While Coursera has a lot more selection of professional and accredited courses, MasterClass edges out Coursera, in my opinion, due to their consistent, high-quality videos, ease of use, and notable instructors.

The second consideration is your breadth of curiosity. Are you only interested in filmmaking? Or do you want to round out your knowledge with some complementary courses like Helen Mirren teaches acting or Aaron Sorkin teaches screenwriting? Not only that but are you willing to learn something completely different like the culinary arts by Thomas Keller or unravel space exploration with Neil DeGrasse Tyson? MasterClass is suited for those interested in many subjects, not those who are siloed into one specific area.

Yes, I believe MasterClass is worth it for anyone eager to learn. The $120 per year price point may seem steep at first, but the cost can easily be diluted by making the most of your subscription and watching more courses related to your areas of interest.

The courses are available through an annual subscription.[25] The classes are typically not interactive, though at least one course included interactive assignments where the student acted with other students, either in person or over Skype.[26][27]

Reviewers have noted that some of the courses, such as those related to the performing arts, require that students already have some basic proficiency. The courses were also noted for their high production values, and for inspiring students to continue to pursue the subject matter. Exposure to popular celebrities was also reported as a benefit.[28][29][30][31][32][33] The Verge noted that while the subscriptions initially lasted a lifetime, different courses have different replay value. The publication also noted the challenge of keeping students on the site to take additional classes.[34]

MasterClass costs $180 for an annual pass. Skillshare offers free sign-up and free courses. More interested clients can opt for either a $99 annual membership or a $19 per month plan that works out to $228 per year.

Coursera courses can be free or pay-per-course for expanded access, with available applications for financial aid. Rates vary for courses, specializations and degrees. MasterClass costs $180 for an annual pass.

The caliber of Udemy courses may vary, but user reviews often accompany each class. People may find more practical, professional skills like programming and development on Udemy. At the same time, the platform offers a wider variety that may incorporate more offbeat pursuits, like mindfulness and body language. MasterClass has a more specialized course catalog, covering high-end cooking, sports training from professionals and interior design from award winners.

Coursera is all about teaching you the hard skills that you need to get ahead in your professional development. Coursera courses are accredited, whereas MasterClass courses are not. Plus, you can actually get full degrees through Coursera, which is not something MasterClass is built for.

The Great Courses is the oldest learning platform on this list. It got started over 30 years ago as a catalogue where you could order videos of college-level lectures on all sorts of topics. 30 years later, it has now rolled out The Great Courses Plus, a new subscription based model where you get access to all these high-level, college style courses for a competitive monthly price.

All the classes are taught by college professors (or similarly qualified individuals), the classes are considerably longer than MasterClass classes (think 20+ hours), and the content is much more academic. Having said that, the courses are also not accredited.

For what MasterClass offers, we think the price is reasonable and certainly better with the 2023 price drop, though it's still not quite an impulse buy. It would be better if there were a month-to-month option. Other similar non-degree learning courses are priced all over the map.

Compared with other online learning sites, MasterClass has fewer courses and a limited range of topics, though courses often are much longer and more in-depth than what you get elsewhere. Skillshare, for instance, covers practically any skill you can think of. It also has recruited a few big names, like Ashley C. Ford on personal essays and Mary Karr on memoir writing. On Skillshare, you can also find people who teach much more specific or niche skills, say, how to increase your presence as an Etsy seller or how to draw succulents and cacti. That said, there's no uniformity in the quality, length, or structure of the class.

Some sections have a slim roster of courses. As of this writing, the Science and Tech category has ten, though some of them don't seem like they really belong there. For example, there are two courses with DJs that are really music-focused and another about "advertising and creativity." So some of the categories seem artificially beefed up. Many courses are booked in more than one category.

Most lessons are anywhere from 6 to 20 minutes long, and most courses are at least 18 lessons long, though some are much longer. Some courses have bonus content, too, such as David Lynch explaining Transcendental Meditation for 17 minutes using diagrams he draws with a Sharpie.

I've watched a lot of MasterClass courses. I started with Penn and Teller, who teach the art of magic. Johnny Thompson, who passed away in 2019, also shows up for several lessons. He's worth mentioning because he was one of the most respected magicians of the last 100 years and a longtime consultant and collaborator for the duo.

Penn and Teller invite magic students onto the set to learn and practice alongside them. You see common mistakes beginners make and how the pros correct them, which is incredibly helpful. Some videos in this series come with PDFs summarizing the lesson. For other courses, you might find recipe PDFs or an entire course booklet.

The playlists are fantastic, as they let the MasterClass editors pull together some of the best moments from courses that have the most universal appeal. Plus, they are much shorter than a full course. They also may lead you to get interested in a course that might not have captured your attention when browsing through the MasterClass content in other ways.

The events were recorded, and they are available to the public for free, though they're hard to find. Look for a link in the footer of the MasterClass homepage or on YouTube. While some of these hour-long sessions can give you insight into a particular MasterClass instructor, they aren't at all representative of the quality of the courses you get from the paid membership. Those videos are highly organized and produced, whereas the MasterClass Live content is off-the-cuff and informal.
