If you want a robust security solution for your vehicle's hitch receiver to protect against theft while navigating mountain driving, choose Master Lock Silver; if you need a heavy-duty, water-tight locking mechanism for a truck tool box or trailer storage chest, choose Buyers Products Company L8816.
• Master Lock Silver: Its biggest strength is the swivel head design and extended shaft that accommodates both 2-inch and 2.5-inch hitches with corrosion-resistant stainless steel; its trade-off is that it is strictly limited to securing hitch pins and cannot be used for general storage access. This pick is for drivers who need to secure their towing equipment on rugged terrain.
• Buyers Products Company L8816: Its biggest strength is the adjustable cam and water-tight gasket system that seals out moisture for tool boxes and cabinets; its trade-off is that it requires a specific mounting panel depth and is not designed for external hitch pin security. This pick is for owners who need to seal and lock down cargo areas in harsh weather.
The Master Lock Silver and Red Receiver Lock is engineered for a very specific purpose: securing the hitch pin of a tow package. When you are hauling gear up steep inclines or traversing rough mountain roads, the last thing you want is your trailer or accessory detaching due to a stolen or loose pin. This unit features a 5/8-inch diameter locking pin with a substantial 3.5-inch long shaft, providing the leverage and length needed to fit securely into late-model trucks equipped with heavy-duty tow packages.
What stands out most about this design is the stainless steel construction paired with a swivel head. In real-world conditions where you might be dealing with mud, salt, or grime after a winter drive, the swivel head allows for easy alignment and access even when the receiver is slightly misaligned. The material choice directly addresses the need for corrosion resistance, ensuring the lock does not seize up when exposed to the elements. Whether you are parked at a trailhead or leaving your rig overnight, the "Push to Lock Security" mechanism offers a reliable barrier against casual theft attempts.
However, this product is not a universal solution. If you are looking for a lock to secure a toolbox, a cabinet, or a storage chest on the back of your truck, this is not the right tool. It is a dedicated hitch pin lock. Furthermore, while it fits 2-inch and 2.5-inch hitches, users must ensure their specific receiver matches the 5/8-inch pin diameter requirement. If you own an older vehicle with a non-standard receiver size or a lighter duty package that doesn't utilize a heavy-duty tow configuration, this specific model may not fit without modification or verification. It is a specialized piece of hardware for a specialized job.

The Buyers Products Company L8816 Folding T-Handle Latch serves a completely different function in the ecosystem of truck and trailer accessories. This is a heavy-duty locking latch designed specifically for sealing and securing compartments like truck tool boxes, trailer tool boxes, cabinets, and storage chests. If your primary concern is keeping your tools dry, safe from prying, and protected from the elements during transit, this is the component you need. The unit is built from heavy-duty stainless steel, which gives it the structural integrity to withstand the vibration and impact of tough job sites and bumpy mountain drives.
One of the most critical features for anyone storing valuable gear is the water-tight design. This latch includes a stud mount and a gasket that creates a seal, preventing rain, snow, and road spray from entering your storage area. Unlike standard latches that might leak over time, the gasket ensures a tight closure. Additionally, the adjustable cam allows this single unit to fit a variety of panel depths, ranging from 1.25 inches to 2 inches. This versatility makes it an excellent replacement part for broken or damaged latches on RVs, trailers, and trucks, eliminating the need to hunt for a specific brand match.
That said, this product is not intended for use as a hitch lock or a standalone padlock. It requires a mounting surface with a corresponding strike plate or frame. While the stainless steel body resists corrosion, the installation process demands precision to ensure the gasket sits correctly and the cam adjusts properly to the door thickness. If you are trying to secure a tow bar or a receiver pin, this latch will not work because it lacks the necessary shaft length and locking cylinder configuration for that application. It is purely a compartment security solution, offering peace of mind that your cargo stays put and stays dry.

In my opinion, if I were preparing a truck for a serious mountain driving trip where I am towing a trailer or carrying heavy equipment, I would buy the Master Lock Silver. The ability to secure the hitch pin with a swivel head that resists corrosion is non-negotiable when you are miles from help on a remote trail. However, if I were outfitting my truck bed with a new tool box or upgrading an aging trailer storage chest, I would immediately choose the Buyers Products Company L8816. The combination of a water-tight seal and an adjustable cam provides a level of protection for my cargo that a hitch lock simply cannot offer. Both products excel in their specific domains, but neither can do the other's job.
Yes, the Master Lock Silver features an extended length shaft that is specifically designed to fit both 2-inch and 2.5-inch hitches, making it suitable for heavy-duty tow packages.
The latch is designed with a gasket and stud mount to create a water-tight installation, ensuring that moisture and dust are kept out of your tool boxes or storage chests.
The Buyers Products Company L8816 comes with a complete locking system including a lock cylinder and a key set. The Master Lock Silver typically uses a keyed cylinder as well, though you should verify the specific key type included in your purchase.
Both products utilize stainless steel construction to resist corrosion. The Master Lock Silver focuses on a swivel head for moving parts, while the Buyers Products Company L8816 adds a gasket to prevent water ingress entirely.
