M*A*S*H (stylized on-screen as MASH) is a 1970 American black comedy war film directed by Robert Altman and written by Ring Lardner Jr., based on Richard Hooker's 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The picture is the only theatrically released feature film in the M*A*S*H franchise.

M*A*S*H became one of the biggest films of the early 1970s for 20th Century-Fox and is now considered one of the greatest films ever made and also won the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, later named the Palme d'Or, at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival. The film went on to receive five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1996, M*A*S*H was included in the annual selection of 25 motion pictures added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and recommended for preservation.[3] The Academy Film Archive preserved M*A*S*H in 2000.[4]

M*A*S*H was a box-office hit; it was the third highest-grossing film released in 1970 (behind Love Story and Airport).[22] The film opened January 25, 1970, at the Baronet Theatre in New York City and grossed $37,143 in its first week.[23] According to 20th Century-Fox records the film required $6,550,000 in rentals to break even, and by 11 December 1970 had made $31,225,000, thus making a profit for the studio.[24] Ultimately, the film made $81.6 million[25] against a budget of $3 million.[26]

The Film which came out in 1970 during the height of the Vietnam War was no doubt one of the most subversive films to premiere during the war and it's hard to imagine Altman doing this accidentally. He usually seems very aware of the way things come across in his films and I wouldn't put it past him to make this ostensible comedy have some genuinely troubling elements on purpose.

The late Roger Ebert said in his 1970 review of the film this "When they are matter-of-factly cruel to "Hot Lips" Hoolihan, we cannot quite separate that from the matter-of-fact way they've got to put wounded bodies back together again. "Hot Lips," who is all Army professionalism and objectivity, is less human because the suffering doesn't reach her.

When the movie MASH debuted in January 1970, it was an unlikely hit in the midst of the Vietnam War. Add that MASH was a comedy, and it seemed even more crass than a film about war at the time. While the movie was about the Korean War, the anti-war commentary was just as applicable in 1970 in the United States. A movie that mixed the horrors of war with comedy (something the television series M*A*S*H would later do) proved to attract audiences. The Robert Altman film went on to be very successful at the box office. A lot of that success was due in part to a successful advertising campaign and taking advantage of widely read publications. What strikes me most about this press kit is the simplicity. Today, we see press kits that include DVDs, t-shirts, gift bags, and various other swag items. In 1969 and early 1970, 20th Century-Fox just needed to get the word out about MASH since it was a fairly low budget production. Nothing fancy was needed. Of course, the movie did well and spawned one of the most successful television series in history. The film has become a classic along side the series despite the difference in tone in each. The publicity clearly worked as MASH was successful at the box office rounding out 1970 in the top 5.

This is an original Swedish one-sheet movie poster from 1970 for MASH starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, Sally Kellerman, Robert Duvall and Gary Burgoff. Robert Altman directed the classic, Korean War comedy.
