Masakhane African Languages Hub launched its first-ever Request for Proposals (RFPs) between August – October 2025 — a milestone in advancing open, inclusive, and community-driven innovation across Africa.
We received 93 applications from 22 countries including DR Congo, Mali, Burundi, Burkina Faso and Somalia. Of these, 86 were from across Africa and 7 from beyond the continent, showcasing the global momentum toward equitable AI and open research.
We were particularly inspired by the cross-country collaborations that emerged with at least 8 consortia spanning borders and languages with submissions in English, French, and bilingual formats. The cycle reaffirmed the importance of multi-lingual accessibility, participatory feedback sessions and fostering partnership opportunities especially for first time grant applicants.
At the core of the Hub is its community centred approach that emphasise building together. As we move into the next phase of the application process we are delighted to welcome the Technical Advisory Panel - an independent group of reviewers with experience in AI, language technology, social impact and are committed to public interest technology.
( TAP) The panel will play a key role in reviewing shortlisted proposals that align with the RFP criteria and Masakhane Hub’s vision. By including external reviewers and experts from across sectors, we aim to strengthen objectivity, accountability, validation and ensure that projects selected are of value to the community
