Criteria and Procedures for the Spellman Award
Each Maryland Alpha Delta Kappa Chapter may nominate one of its members for the award biennially.
The nominee shall have met the following requirements
She must be an active member of a Maryland Chapter.
She must have participated in chapter, state, and regional or International levels of Alpha Delta Kappa (i.e., chaired and/or worked on committees, attended and actively worked at conferences and/or conventions).
She must have contributed to the profession of education (i.e. volunteer service of time and energy beyond monetary contributions).
She must have contributed to community and/or civic organizations (i.e. volunteer service of time and energy beyond monetary contributions).
She must have contributed to charitable and/or altruistic projects of Alpha Delta Kappa and/or other groups (i.e. volunteer service of time and energy beyond monetary contributions).
The chapter president shall submit the following documents:
The nominee’s basic information, including, name, address, phone number, chapter, and month and day of initiation.
A resume of the nominee’s Alpha Delta Kappa activities (e.g. offices and committee chairmanships held, conferences attended, workshops conducted, etc.). Include activities at the chapter, state, and regional or international levels. Please include the name and phone number of the person providing the resume information.
Resumes of the nominee’s contributions/activities in the following areas-(1) the profession of education, (2) community and/or civic organizations, and (3) charitable and/or altruistic projects of ΑΔΚ and/or other groups. Contributions must be volunteer service of time and energy beyond monetary contributions. Indicate year(s) and extent of activities. Be as specific as possible. Please include the name and phone number of the person providing the resume information.
Three supporting statements from those familiar with the nominee’s activities – one for each of statements three (3), four (4) and five (5) in Part A. Be sure to include the name and phone number for persons submitting letters of support.
The Nomination Packet must be submitted by February 1, 20-- (even-numbered years)
The Award will be presented during the Maryland State Convention in even-numbered years.
The selection shall be made from those nominated regardless of the numbered nominated.
It is named in honor and memory of Representative Gladys Noon Spellman who served in the U.S. Congress (1974-1981), representing Prince George’s County, MD. In 1976, MD A∆K initiated Representative Spellman as its first State Honorary Member.

Timeline for Nomination Process – Spellman Award
Fall-Executive Board Meeting (Odd-Numbered Year) - At the Chapter Presidents Fall Meeting the Spellman Award Committee Chairman distributes the Award Packet to the Chapter Presidents.
Fall – Winter - Chapter prepared their nominations and mail them to Chairman.
February 1(Even Numbered Years) - All nominations must be received by Committee Chairman.
March 1(Even Numbered Years) - Recipient is selected by the committee. Committee reviews and prepares written material for awards presentation at the State Convention. Individual plaque is ordered by the committee chair and the state plaque is obtained from the previous recipient and engraved with the name of the current recipient. The State President is notified of the name of the recipient as is the recipient’s Chapter President. The recipient is not told until the name is announced at the convention.
