A group of independent grocers near Newark, NJ joined forces in 1946 to form the Wakefern Food cooperative, and five years later, introduced their brand name: ShopRite. The cooperative grew with stores spreading far beyond the Newark area, and is now the largest retailers' cooperative in the country. Independent Wakefern members own ShopRite and Fairway Market stores in New York City, and Wakefern owns Morton Williams outright.
