Answering such questions is what this blog is about. Taking what researchers have learned, and what great musicians have intuited, and figuring out how to put all of it into action. Both in the practice room, and on stage.
Musicians are exposed to high-risk musculoskeletal activities such as repetition, hours of exposure, and awkward postures when playing instruments. These activities may result in playing-related musculoskeletal disorders. Musicians often work part-time or seasonally or are self-employed. Thus, they may be uninsured or underinsured and may delay seeking care for these painful and potentially disabling conditions. Prevention of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders includes identification of both intrinsic (e.g., musician strength and flexibility) and extrinsic (e.g., musician posture while playing an instrument) factors involved in the interface between musicians and their instruments and the playing environment (e.g., rest breaks or hours of practice). Student occupational health nurse practitioners in this pilot project performed outreach and comprehensive screening and treatment for a small group of musicians diagnosed as having playing-related musculoskeletal disorders. Tendon and nerve gliding exercises were a key component of the treatment plan.
While there is a long history of musicians utilizing electronic instruments to enhance and define their sound, artists who employ electronic instruments to compose, produce music, or manipulate their voice through various technology tools and platforms are considered electronic musicians. Electronic musicians create music from either electronically generated or electronically modified sounds in one of two ways: by using electronic devices or by modifying natural sounds. They often utilize many tools at once, pulling from both the analog and digital arena.
Electronic musicians bring a high level of proficiency on their instruments of choice. They make inroads as DJs, performers, remixers, producers, and music directors. In addition, electronic musicians find themselves working for various music technology companies as part of their product development and/or sales team. Electronic musicians need to be ready to wear many hats as it is common in the industry in which electronic musicians and artists will need to diversify their skill set and pursue multiple career paths at the same time in order to have a sustainable career.
Whether performing solo or as part of an ensemble, or producing music of other artists, many aspiring electronic musicians intern or apprentice with an established music producer as a production assistant; backing musician; music director or bandleader for an artist on tour; or as a sales engineer or developer at a music technology company that requires in-depth knowledge of technology and music production.
The lifestyle of an electronic musician tends to be essentially the same as that of a touring musician: extended periods away from home, traveling from city to city to play for new audiences every night. Like many performance jobs, being an electronic musician is a freelance field, so securing consistent gigs requires a certain amount of music industry knowledge and connections.

The Mary Pappert School of Music has vetted these musicians and expects that they will uphold the highest professional and performance standards; however, we do not assume responsibility for student misconduct, including cancellations or no-shows.
The Mary Pappert School of Music does not act as an agent for the student musicians and does not issue contracts, nor is it responsible for contractual negotiations made between the client and musicians.
Students and faculty accept performance engagements as freelance performers, not as employees of Washington University. We encourage both clients and musicians to put performance agreements in writing, but please be advised that Washington University does not enforce nor endorse any contract undertaken by students or faculty acting as freelance performers. The contracted student or faculty member will be your point of contact once assigned. Use of this service is entirely at the risk of the users and the University expressly disclaims any and all liability with regards to usage of this site. Special requests, rates, and all other event details, are determined between the artist and the client. The Department of Music reserves the right to refuse requests that do not abide by University policies.

The College of Music enjoys connecting qualified, professional musicians with local patrons for special events and educational opportunities. The Publicity Office in the College of Music maintains a database of current students and local alums who have been approved by their primary professors to represent the College in outside activities like teaching, accompanying, and performing. This list is a tremendous resource for the Tallahassee community and a significant source of income for our students.
Students and ensembles set their own fees, which are negotiated between client and musician. Fees may vary depending on the length of lesson or performance, travel, and services required, as well as the number of musicians involved. Please note: our musicians charge standard professional rates. A good ballpark figure is @ $125 per hour, per musician for private performances, or $25 per 30 minute lesson.

Known for providing exceptional professional musicians for weddings, corporate events, and parties, the College of Performing Arts Gig Office connects the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and Mannes School of Music students with local clients searching for musicians.
Pricing begins at $100 per hour per musician with an additional $25 Processing Fee. We collect payment by check sent to The New School within 30 days of the event. Our performers are available to play in events across all five boroughs of New York City, as well as Westchester County, Northern New Jersey, and Long Island.
To hire a student musician, please make your request through 1__________at least two weeks in advance of your event. After submitting this form, your request will be forwarded to the appropriate musicans. We cannot guarantee that a musician will be available. If you have not heard from any musicians 1-2 weeks before your event, it is possible that we will not be able to accommodate your request.

You may often hear professional musicians use the term "gig" broadly, without clarification on its meaning and usage. At MU we define "gigs" as paid performance opportunities for enrolled MU students, who have been approved for such performances by their primary faculty mentors.
"Clients" may hire these student musicians at an established or negotiated rate. Gigs, then, could include but are not limited to paid performances at weddings, corporate events, private events, or in collaboration with other organizations.
Rates: As a general guideline, you can expect to hire student musicians at the rate of $100 per musician, per hour. These rates are negotiable and greatly depend upon the type of engagement, the length of the engagement, special musical requests, travel distance (according to current state mileage allowance), etc. If you feel the rate is too high for your budget, worry not!
