Researchers are studying whether medical marijuana can help treat a number of conditions including:
Alzheimer's disease
Appetite loss
Crohn's disease
Diseases that affect the immune system, such as HIV/AIDS and Multiple Sclerosis (MS),
Eating disorders like anorexia
Epilepsy
Glaucoma
Mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), can be caused by mental illness.
Multiple sclerosis
Muscle spasms
Nausea
Pain
Seizures
Wasting syndrome (cachexia)
"The greatest amount of evidence for the therapeutic effects of cannabis relate to its ability to reduce chronic pain, nausea, and vomiting due to chemotherapy, and spasticity [tight or stiff muscles] from MS," Bonn-Miller says.
The active chemicals found in medical marijuana, cannabinoids, are very similar to the chemicals that the body produces and are involved in hunger, memory, movement, pain, and other functions.
There is limited research suggesting that cannabinoids may be:
Reduce anxiety
Reduce inflammation and relieve pain
Manage nausea and vomiting due to cancer chemotherapy
Stop tumor growth and kill cells
With MS, relax tight muscles.
People with Cancer or AIDS can stimulate their appetites and increase weight gain
What can medical marijuana do to help with seizures?
Medical marijuana gained a lot attention when parents claimed that it helped to control seizures. The FDA approved Epidiolex as a treatment for severe or difficult-to-treat epilepsy. It is made from CB. In studies, some people had a dramatic drop in seizures after taking this drug.
2018 saw the approval of cannabidiol Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures associated with two severe and rare forms epilepsy, Lennox–Gastaut syndrome and Dravet. Two man-made cannabinoid medicines have been approved by FDA -- dronabinol and Syndros (Marinol and Syndros) -- to treat nausea from chemotherapy.
To get medical marijuana, you need a written recommendation from a licensed medical marijuanas doctor in Brandon MS in states where that is legal. Many doctors are not willing to recommend medical pot for their patients. You must have a condition that qualifies for medical marijuana use.
Each state has its own list. Your state may also require you to get a medical marijuana ID card. Once you have that card, you can buy medical marijuana at a store called a dispensary.
