Discuss the structure of the novel. Why does the author include chapters throughout the book about the whale? Explain how this draws a connection between Iris and Blue 55.

Today in class, we will learn about and discuss themes in our book.
A theme (big idea) refers to a message about life or human nature. The theme is a general, universal concept.
We will watch this BrainPop Theme Video. (Virtual Students - I will ask you to leave the Zoom meeting after checking in with the class to watch this video on your own. After you finish the video, you will rejoin the Zoom meeting).
After watching the video, we will discuss how we can determine the theme by analyzing plot, characterization, dialogue, and setting.

Characters & Character Traits
Class Activity
Today in class, we will learn about and discuss characters and character traits. Often we can make inferences about characters and their traits with what the author shows the reader.

After students watch the video (at least 2 times), we will think about one of the characters in our book and their character traits.
