Hi, I'm Maribel I. García-Ibáñez, biogeochemical oceanographer
I am a biogeochemical oceanographer with a deep interest in the link between chemical and physical oceanographic processes and their implications in the marine environment. My main research areas are the chemistry of the ocean inorganic carbon cycle (in particular ocean acidification) and the water mass formation, transformation, and circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. I am Tenured Scientist at Oceanographic Center of the Balearic Islands, Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC).
My work experience includes leakage detection in offshore reservoirs related to carbon capture and storage (CCS), characterization of dyes used to measure seawater pH, and exploration of the internal consistency of the measurements of the oceanic carbonate system as well as characterisation of the processes affecting the carbon uptake in the Southern Ocean and analysis of tipping points for North Atlantic cold-water corals. In the realm of knowledge transfer and societal contribution, I provide scientific advice to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge through the Marine Strategies program to assess the environmental status of Spain’s EEZ. I represented Spain at the European Marine Board (EMB) in the CO2 removal monitoring group, lead an international working group on best practices for IAPSO, and am part of key international bodies such as the Scientific Steering Committee del 'International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project' (IOCCP) and the UN’s Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) program. My commitment to training is reflected in co-supervising a PhD thesis (2025–2028) and overseeing a Master’s project (2021). Additionally, I contribute to the R&D system as an editor for the journal Ocean Science and as a reviewer for funding agencies in France, Norway, and the USA
