Capstone Overview
The engineering capstone project is a culminating experience for 12th grade students, In this year-long project, students are tasked with identifying a real-world problem and designing a creative and practical solution using the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout their engineering coursework.
The primary objective of the capstone project is to provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to a practical context, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation. It encourages students to think like engineers by identifying and analyzing complex problems, designing effective solutions, and implementing their ideas through prototyping and testing.
Problem Selection
My group chose the issue of flipping sheet music during performances. We chose this problem because of the experience we have had during our music careers. Having witnessed many failed attempts to flip sheet music while playing, we thought creating a solution to this well known problem would yield a major profit, as well as a solution to a problem affecting anyone that hears, plays, or enjoys music.
Solution
Our device is primarily made from wood. Two foot pedals are placed at the wooden base of the device. Pressing the front of pedal with the tip of your shoe turns the page froward, and pressing the back of the pedal moves the page back.Â
The pedals are connected to two switches, with forwards and backwards capabilities, which are connected to wires that run up the neck of the stand that connect to two forward and reverse motors. These motors connect to our pulley system which moves the prongs back and forth, resulting in a page being flipped in the desired direction.
