Margherita Cacaci is a researcher at the Institute of Microbiology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. She graduated in Medical Biotechnology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in 2013. In 2017, she completed a joint PhD program in Microbiology through a partnership between the Catholic University and the University of Caen in France discussing the thesis titled "Expression Profiling in a Mammalian Host Reveals Strong Induction of Lys-M Domain-Containing Proteins."
In 2019, she enrolled in a specialization school program in Microbiology, which she completed in April 2023.
Her primary areas of interest revolve around the diagnosis and prevention of biofilm-associated infections, with a specific emphasis on infections linked to medical devices. Her research focuses on two main areas: the development and validation of new panels for molecular diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infections and the characterization of the antimicrobial activity of nanomaterials and nanocomposites. In particular, the characterization aims to create nanocomposites that can be used to fabricate medical devices capable of withstanding microbial colonization and subsequent biofilm formation.
