Dr. Flavio De Maio is currently a microbiologist at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli – IRCCS. He reaches M.Sc in Medical Biotechnology and then Specialty in Clinical Microbiology and Virology at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome. He attains a PhD. in PhD in basic biomedical and public health sciences at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, with the thesis: “PE_PGRS3 of Mycobacterium tuberculosis: a specialized protein at the forefront of host-pathogen interaction”. It is part of Dipartimento di Scienze di Laboratorio e Infettivologiche since 2009, early as student and now as clinical microbiologist. Additionally, it is part of Microbiota analysis & Microbial WGS Research Core Facilty, GSTeP since 2020.
Major research interests include: a) the study of Mtb virulence factors, especially surface antigens belonging to PE_PGRS family; b) expression and purification of Mtb proteins in heterologous systems; c) application of carbon based nanomaterials as innovative treatment of mycobacterial infections or to enhance PPE efficacy against Mtb or SARS-COV-2; d) study of the microbial community (microbiota) of several human environmental niches; e) genomic characterization of bacterial or viral (SARS-CoV-2) genomes. He is the author of articles published in numerous international journals.
