While some system and network administrators may overlook the importance of maintaining a clean workspace,
I take pride in ensuring that my work environment is well-organized and tidy. Cabling and Proper e-Waste and drive destruction,
are all parts of a SysAdmins job, some find this work beneath them, but it is part of the job, nothing is too small or too big.

VMware Administration

Design, install, configure and maintain VMware infrastructure
Manage VM performance and optimize for performance
ESXi 5.5-6.3, vCenter, vShphere, vMotion and Horizon.

Documentation, KB, Wiki

Its crucial to create documentation, high and low level, and be able to share that, so others can complete tasks, learn from and rely on, otherwise you will spend too much time explaining and asking others, slowing more work down.

Maintenance and OS Patching

SCCM, Intune and JAMf patching are routine, along with CMRs (change management requests) ARBs (architecture review boards) working with every aspect of the company, all stakeholders, and being accountable for your tasks and projects. Automation is key in these regards, Bash, Python and Powershell scripting routine tasks will allow you more time to focus on the larger issues at hand.

Break/Fix, repairs, troubleshooting, maintenance is part of the job, identifying parts out of warranty, asset management, working with Vendors, its all common place for a sysadmin. Rack and Stack to the trash out back. It all falls under our job responsibilities and duties.

HAVING A GOOD WORK FROM HOME SETUP IS CRUCIAL

It is crucial to have a good hybrid setup for weekend maintenance and on call duties. While I prefer to work in the office, having a proper setup to be able to utilize work and personal equipment is great for testing, you can also continue studying while in call down time and monitoring or directing issues; and be ready to jump into anything at a moments notice. Its a very important part of the role that is often overlooked.

Disaster Recovery

Keeping DR plans updated, reviewing infrastructure, coordinating with all teams to ensure the plans remain up to date, testing is completed, backups are functioning, generators are tested, and people know their roles is important.

Physical Security

Working with our security team to ensure people have least privilege access, that areas are secure, incidents are reported and well documented.
No tailgating, and pass back in the data center is enforced.

Successful Cloud Migrations

Migrating OnPrem storage to Azure for upcoming building move. We assessed and catalogued all our resources, permissions and analyzed our current security, Built a plan to increase security, Completed operational and user acceptance testing, and then began our migration, testing with a few people from each team to ensure there would be no surprises, keeping all stakeholders involved in the entire process. Ensuring a seamless transition. Here are the old EMCs going out.

Maintaining Legacy Backups

While everything is moving forwards to cloud backups, its not always possible to move forwards, and I maintain our legacy tape backups as well. Working with Iron mountain to keep everything catalogued, retained, and with budget constraints with some departments, tapes will be reused, this requires extreme attention to detail to ensure the safety and preservation of data.

Software and License Management

Herbalife's R&D department recently acquired StatGraphics, a new software, following successful ARB and cybersecurity evaluations. Initially, six licenses were purchased. The software's efficiency in generating reports led to increased demand. Collaborating with stakeholders and the vendor, I developed a cost-effective solution by deploying Security Groups, a GPO and License server. This enabled 60 users to access the software across various zones and facilitated its integration into virtual machines, thereby providing functionality for Mac users that was previously unavailable. The rapid adoption of this system proved instrumental in optimizing the use of other less frequently utilized licenses, saving the company more money in the long run, Small Project, Large impact.

I have found so much old software cleaning up the data center. Even a Sealed Win95 in 2024!!

Print Severs and Management

I am responsible for the print server cluster and its management, patching, inventory. We have over 90 MFPs across 20 US locations, 700+ networked HP laser printers, 200+ Zebra networked label printers and a dozen plotters. Page counts and billing are managed via Ricoh FM audit and Ricoh Trac, We Utilize Xerox Centerware Web for all printer status and events, which is integrated with our current ticketing system Service Now (SNOW) for quick response for our users. Including a badge access follow me print, scan to email, shared drive and good old fashioned faxing.

Desktop and Helpdesk support

Even as my career grows, I have absolutely no problem assisting the Desktop and Helpdesk teams with their job, or if they come to me with an escalation, we are a team and round out IT support. Working together, we can better support the company and the staff, stay knowledgeable about all changes, processes and stay informed of in real time. Teamwork makes the dreamwork, which also leads me perfectly into my next topic. These are your future Sys Admins and more.

While I have had numerous remarkable mentors, whose contributions are too extensive to list here, it is equally important to share knowledge, train, educate, and assist others. Always strive to give back 100% of what you have received. Ensuring that you are not the sole holder of knowledge and actively participating as part of a team is crucial. It can be detrimental to workplace relationships to be the only expert on a subject without adequate support. True job security comes from being part of a strong, cohesive team, not from being the sole master of a subject.

While supporting the QC lab, you are required to wear eye protection, and a lab coat, you must also pass their safety training to be around the chemicals.

Construction Configurations

During a Lobby remodel, we had to relocate Security, the receptionists and operators to a bungalow in the courtyard to maintain operations.
