Crypton Future Media's global marketing team contacted me via email to request an illustration of their iconic character, Hatsune Miku, for concert merchandises and media promotion. They provided the prompt of "American comic superhero," asking me to incorporate this theme into the outfit design. I also needed to consider that the merchandises would be printed in CMYK, which can affect how vibrant colors translate to the final product. Therefore, I aimed to avoid colors that might not reproduce effectively due to printing constraints.
This prompt presented a challenge, as my knowledge of American superhero comics was limited. To address this, I conducted extensive research on established outfit designs of American comic heroines and skillfully integrated these elements with Hatsune Miku's original attire. I then shared my thought process with the client, detailing the origins of the design choices I made. While the bodysuit is a common feature among superheroes, I aimed to preserve the A-shaped silhouette of Hatsune Miku's original outfit. To highlight the bodysuit, I rendered the dress slightly translucent, inspired by the reference image of a black PVC skirt. Additionally, I incorporated an iridescent glow into the skirt to evoke a futuristic aesthetic. To further differentiate the design, I added wings to her headphones, enhancing the overall look while maintaining the essence of the original character.
In the first sketch I provided (left), the client was pleased with the overall composition but requested the removal of the roadsign. To maintain balance within the composition, I replaced the roadsign with a mic stand (right). The client then requested a change to the phonograph, asking for a different element altogether.
I aimed to incorporate an object that amplifies sound, reflecting Miku's role as a voice for the world. I replaced the phonograph with a retro speaker, which the client found satisfactory. I then proceeded to render the details of the illustration.
This is the semi-final product after rendering, where I highlighted various textures in the outfit, including reflective black leather, translucent PVC, and the polka dot pattern on the wings. The client requested one final change to the top frame of the background, which is reflected in the final illustration.
