Maps.me is a mobile app for Android, iOS and BlackBerry that provides offline maps using OpenStreetMap data. It was formerly known as MapsWithMe. In November 2014, it was acquired by Mail.Ru Group and became part of its My.com brand. In September 2015, the app was open sourced[5] and a free and open-source software version was additionally made available on F-droid[6] until the application was sold to the payment processor Daegu Limited, part of Parity.com, which changed the application user interface and content,[7][8] which led Alexander Borsuk and Viktor Govako (former MapsWithMe founders) to release an open source ad-and tracker-free fork called 'Organic Maps' in response.[9]

MAPS.ME (formerly known as MapsWithMe) is a free, proprietary mobile app for iOS and Android that provides offline maps of 345 countries and islands based on OpenStreetMap data. Older versions were open source but it has changed[3].

The vast majority of Maps.me contributions are language-specific (using name: instead of name), requiring correction by experienced contributors in order to show up on maps not specific to the language used (if the object previously had no name tag). This behaviour prevents inexperienced tourists from unwittingly overwriting native names, but of course places a bit of a workload on "normal mappers". Experienced contributors can edit the name tag directly by tapping Add a language and selecting the Native for each country option.

In 2013 developers of YotaPhone, a Russian smartphone with two displays, asked MapsWithMe to develop a version of the app especially for the e-ink display of the device. MapsWithMe released a special version of the app optimized for both color and e-ink screens of the smartphone[13]. The main screen allows users to see maps of all world countries, drop pins on the map and find their location. Then it is possible to move the maps to the e-ink display to use the map in the energy-saving mode.

The main competitors of MAPS.ME are mobile apps that provide offline maps: Guru Maps, Organic Maps, OsmAnd, City Maps 2Go, 2Gis and others. Possibility to download unlimited number of maps, fast rendering and offline search are among benefits of MAPS.ME.

Today I opened my Maps.me app and tried downloading a map and it says I need to get the pro version since I've reached my limit of maps. But it says 10 maps, and I've downloaded over 10 maps without this popping up before. Is this a recent change? Less free maps and a push to getting people to go pro?

Photographers need marking and saving locations for a variety of use cases. And if an internet connection isn't available, Google Maps is essentially useless. There is a way to download a portion of the map for offline use, but this feature isn't intended for large portions of the map, like a whole country. So, if you are a power user and have created multiple lists of hundreds of saved places that span many countries, the offline maps feature becomes woefully inadequate. So, what's the solution?

Why would you just not use Google Maps Offline? It does everything Google Maps does... But offline? It's a simple download and you don't need an extra app. Maybe I'm missing something?

Google Maps > menu > offline maps> done

Yes there maybe a few offline maps that need to be created, but being able to search business names and roads or any location published on Google maps, it has been very useful in foreign countries. Especially if your plans change. Plus all the other features you listed are also offered.

Thanks for the comment Bry! I wish I could say I was having the same experience with offline Google Maps as you are. In theory, it does seem to be just that easy. But on iOS, the window the give you to select where you want to download isnt customizable and grabbing a large area would need three or more individual maps, and its even worse when trying it in landscape mode.

As for the complexity and extra steps in the rest of the article, all of that is purely so you when you do your research (I use My Maps) you can put those precise locations in Maps.me. If you want to just download an offline map in Maps.me its WAY more simple.

Are you using an Android phone perhaps? Maybe the interface and usability of Googles offline maps is better served to those customers?

Anyway I absolutely appreciate you feedback!

Very good points.

As a couple of the other commenters have pointed out, Google Maps doesn't have as robust of a trail network as Maps.me (or openstreetmap which is what they use), which is very useful for the hiker. And something I neglected to mention in the article, is that Maps.me also can do tracks, so if you're hiking, you can retrace your steps. Something that Gaia does for free, but downloading maps for offline use costs $40 a year. Maps.me included both of these features for free.

Its a nice little perhaps entry level app that might be useful for the beginner, until they need more specialized tools like Gaia and the like.

There is a very good list that compares apps and what they are able to do: _of_iOS_applications

Personally I like Komoot (on Android, I don't know if the iOS version is as good), as you can not only display maps but also plan your route offline.

When I know I'm going to a place without service, I just buy a cheap paper map at a store in the area. I know this might be too high-tech for some of you but if you dig in and buy a highlighter you can do some amazing things. Best of all when you are at places that are remote, paper maps don't have to be recharged. My favorite part is at the end of the trip you have something for the scrapbook of your adventure.

Now i found out whats missing. On my maps.me i can expand the white panel but i dont get this EDIT PLACE button.

its just not there.

When i use in the main menue, i can add eg. store, bank appartements, but no building. after this dialog i can log into openstreetmap account and save to OSM.

I did it yesterday. I added a vet doctor, that worked out and its allready on the map.

Hey, pizzadriver, the problem you had with MapsMe is quite simple. It has a built in mechanism to prevent editing if the map is outdated (older then one month if I remember correctly). The maps usually get update with the new release of the App. And with the previous release we had no update for about 2 months already. So nobody using MapsMe could edit OSM. Just FYI for the future.

Ok, i know it now ! Recently we had an update again. But it only updated the main APP not the maps.

The APP now contains commercial ads.

Ok, i offerd them to pay the paid plan with bitcoin or dash but they did not want this. so i dont pay for the moment

This is a review of various navigation systems I used on a recent trip to Germany and northern Austria earlier this month. Background - I've owned a Garmin Nuvi with European maps for several years and I updated the maps to the 2019 set before the trip. I've never wanted to waste data using Google Maps in the past so I have Maps.Me loaded on my IOS and Android devices and I downloaded all the regional/local maps for my trip before leaving. I did not anticipate getting a nav system equipped rental but I did - a 2019 Ford Kuga (Escape) with Ford SYNC. I used/spot-checked all for a Munich-Salzburg-Innsbruck-Dinkelsbuhl-Trier-Koblenz-Frankfurt road trip and here is the good and bad.

Google Maps- While really good for in-town lookup of addresses and attractions, it's not so great for longer distance navigation in Europe (IMHO). The AI used to route between Point A and Point B is highly biased and may not match what you want to do - especially if you're vacationing. It was also easy to confuse using German street addresses and performed much better if you knew the map coordinates of your destination. While people have uploaded their own maps of the custom maps Romantic Road, they are for reference only. A great new feature would be to search for and navigate via a country's special (scenic) roads like the German Romantische Strasse.

Maps.Me - Great offline navigation tool as long as you download all the maps you'll need before hand. It did just as good of a job as the Garmin and Google Maps and it seemed to have better/more up to date points of interest than the Garmin. I did a lot of navigating with my phone's data connection turned off using Maps.Me and it seemed to perform somewhere between the Ford SYNC's Nav and the Garmin in terms of accuracy and timeliness.

I use Google Maps (mostly online because data is so cheap) because I am used to it and use it for everything. I can plan out maps on my laptop and save points of interest and access the maps on my phone later - very easy. I used to have a Garmin GPS unit that I've used in Europe to drive a few times, but once I tried out Google Maps on my phone once I got a decent smart phone, I sold the Garmin while it was still worth something. And the Garmin certainly had features I liked that Google Maps doesn't. But the phone with Google Maps has worked well enough for me for all kinds of navigation. It's easiest for me to keep using it in every situation instead of trying another app or device.

Another big thumbs up here for Maps.Me. I download maps before every trip, and it hasn't let me down yet. I have found it especially useful in Venice, where Maps.Me always seems to know where the bridges are and which side of a canal has a sidewalk. GoogleMaps has a penchant for picking impossible routes, and assumes that every canal has sidewalks.

I have the Here maps app on my phone, but can't work out how to download new maps for the places I'm going to this year. The website seems to be aimed at users of technical data. Can anyone help? Are the maps for download found somewhere else?

Edited to add: OK, I've found there is a different website called "Here we go."

I seem to recall that last time I downloaded the maps via my internet-connected laptop onto the mobile phone via a USB connection. But this time I couldn't get that to work (same laptop, same phone). So I'll have to use the wi-fi in the local library as the SIM in that phone won't work until I'm in the UK, and I'd like to do the downloading before I leave home. ff782bc1db
