"Hello Mason, I keep buying flowers for my significant other, but I usually get them from Wegmans or similar grocery stores, so the arrangements tend to look the same each time. Can you offer suggestions on how I can purchase higher-quality flowers and support local florists, while still staying within a reasonable budget?"
Apologies for answering so late, but this is a fantastic thing to look out for! Making your own arrangements is a fun little thing to do. Going to a florist is always an option, but it's definitely a little more expensive, and sadly, the best choice for flowers at this time of the year. There are a few florists in town, like Westcott Florists or Whistlestop Florists, but again, they are real florists making whole arrangements that can get pricy quickly. You could try your hand at the CNY Regional Market in Syracuse, but I personally haven't seen anyone selling by the stem since I've been going during the holiday/winter season. That doesn't mean that there couldn't be someone who happened upon a batch of *something* they picked up and are reselling, but it's a whole lot less reliable than during the growing season, when there are many farms that come every weekend.
It's definitely not supporting small businesses, but one of the best options to get cut stems all year round is Trader Joe's. When the snow begins to let up, a great company in CNY is Forest Ridge Farmstead in Warners- they do a lot of cool work. Sadly, the majority of growers right now are only accepting wholesale payments, so buying a few stems of something will be out of the cards(unless you get lucky and find someone cool!) until April/May.
I know this isn't a great answer, but it's also the slow time of the year for the business. Hope it helps at least!
P.S. In my research, I found a fun spot called Crazy Daisy's in Syracuse. Kind of an upscale Millennial greenhouse/cut flower/cafe thing? Looks silly and prime date material, if you'd be looking for ideas for you and your s/o ;)

Today I accepted the position with Seven Islands! I am very excited to take this opportunity. Of all the annoying things that will happen next semester, I am very happy that that was one thing that will go well. The struggle I think will be to find a way to get home for Caleb's graduation, but I am sure I can figure something out flight wise.
I also got to talk to Paige and Colleen for a bit today. I miss both of them dearly. Incredibly excited for Thanksgiving break this month and having the ability to run home and hang out with them for a bit. I don't think I've hung out with both of them in over two years. If this summer pans out right, I might be able to have a weekend where Colleen drives up from the island and Paige flies in or something along those lines. Things are looking up for the summer! The five months between now and then, though, are still up in the air, but we shall make it through.
Took out new trail shoes yesterday. Nike Pegasus 5s I got for cheap at the Dick's outlet in the mall. I haven't owned Nike in almost 4 years now, and honestly, unless it's on another crazy sale, I don't think I will. They're the definition of middling. Totally down the middle for everything it can be used for. Not a great road shoe because it's heavier (got the version that was waterproof, which is very nice but heavier), not great as a trail shoe since it's got such a high drop. Not going to like these anywhere near as much as the Lone Peaks or the Catamounts(genuinely one of my favorite pairs of shoes I've EVER owned), but I'll at least get 400 miles in them, I think. They are a silly color. Fine shoes I guess. Would never pay $180 for them at full price, though. I don't know how Nike keeps selling their non-racing shoes for so much when there's a million cheaper options for EVERY type of running that are all at least $20 cheaper.

A beautiful day with friends. After my family left, we had a whole group come over today to have lunch/dinner. Jon and Sam cooked for us, got to finally meet the lovely Jill, among many other highlights. The Bills did not choke in the last 4 minutes of the game. Suicide postponed one more week.
Made a small arrangement from material on sale at Trader Joe's. I think I will have to frequent them more often because they have a decent selection of not only flowers but also greens. I like to make arrangements with more than just the flowering bodies (thank my mother for that style), so I appreciate the selection they have, especially considering the fact that much of leaves will soon fall off outside. Was thinking about maybe holding a wreath workshop sometime now for people, I miss doing hort stuff. Type a 1 in chat if you're interested.

My family came up today! Got to see my parents and Caleb, which was very, very fun. I felt kind of bad thing there is very little to do in this city, there was a good chunk of time even in just the one day they were up that we were bored. We were in fact able to get down to Cortland to see my grandparents, who had driven up to meet us for lunch at Brix, which was a fun pizza place I gotta finish the leftovers for. Went out for a drink with them in the evening, talked for a good long while about all sorts of things. I miss them all so much.
