However, there is one genre that falls into both the manga and light novel category that is starting to see a resurgence in popularity once more. Shoujo, a genre that focuses on works aimed towards young female readers, though anyone of any age can enjoy them.

This is where My Happy Marriage comes into play. Written by Akumi Agitogi and illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka, both the manga and light novel editions tell the story of Miyo Saimori, a young woman, who is part of a renowned noble family which is gifted with supernatural abilities, but she was born without any power of her own. Frequently abused and neglected by her family, she is given away as a potential bride to Kiyoka Kudou, heir to another powerful family surrounded by rumors of cruelty from rejecting past would-be brides.

Recently, I got very fond of Overlord. As the anime stopped at season 1 and there's no news of season 2 yet, I thought I will give a try for the manga continuation for the first time. I thought of buying the manga at Amazon as it's the only website I could find selling Overlord series.

So as to be completely unbiased, I made a super-literal translation without looking at the already existing translations. As far as I am aware there are no Overlord light novel Japanese PDFs, just scans, which means I had to type the Japanese text myself from my physical copy.

The girl squeezed her eyes tightly shut and bit her lower lip. She had never asked for this. She had been forced into her present circumstances. If only she had some strength, she might have resisted the enemy in front of her and fled.

A patch of raven black, ultrathin but so deep it seemed as if it went on forever. It was an oval rising up out of the ground, its bottom half cut off. It was a curious sight, but at the same time, it made her feel indescribably uneasy.

It was an infinitesimally thin, yet unfathomably deep blackness. It was a half-oval of obsidian that seemed to protrude from the earth. It was a mysterious sight that filled the ones watching it with a powerful sense of unease.

I find the manga is more in line with the anime. The difference between the manga and the LN is just that the LN can fit more subtle details. There were also some cut portions I noticed. The author fit a lot more detailings such as the interaction between Ainz and the potion master in the city.

Every translation has its errors. I found an occasional sentence that felt like it was mistranslated, but that could just mean that better wording could have been chosen. One always has to read with the intentions of the author instead of the literal words of the translation.

No, the Overlord novels are not illustrated like the manga nor are they the same. Light novels are novels that are slightly illustrated with anime and manga art style, often being adapted into such mediums. They are mainly published in separate book volumes. Manga are comics published in Japan and when enough chapters are made, you get manga volumes that compile them. This applies to Overlord as well.

This is similar to another post I made but I wanted to know when would be a good time to start reading light novels and manga. I just finished N5 today (woohoo) and I would like to have N4 tackled by July. I am also level 9 on wanikani and am slowly ranking up. I want to read mid-level light novels and manga. Would N4 be sufficient for this? (maybe something like quints or dr. stone is what I would want to read).

For light novels, I would recommend holding off until you have a bit more grammar and vocab. Maybe try an easy light novel once you finish N4 stuff. You can do it whenever, but it might be harder to follow along and you will be looking up a lot more per page.

I think Manga is more easier than light novel for N4 and N5 level. If you want to read something that still makes you enjoy the book/manga and without looking at dictionary every sentences, here is my path, might be helpful for you as a reference :

The way how I prepared myself for manga reading is to go thru the Memrise Yotsubato Vocabulary list (yes, someone made a course on that) , and only start to read a book after I finished all the vocab listed in the Memrise course for that particular book.

As other recommended, bookmeter (in Japanese only) and learnatively are great tools. Learnatively is good for finding something that might be your level, while bookmeter is better at finding something based on what you have read that might interest you.

Books written in the first person perspective are a lot easier to read and if you want to brush up your listening skills, look for books with an audio book available. I bought the one for Kiki and it was great to hear it spoken by a native speaker and getting the rythm instead of stumbeling through the chapter.

There is never an easy time to start reading, you just gotta bite the bullet and start with whatever you are comfortable with. I read 5 volumes of Yotsuba& and then started Nisekoi (I am on the fourth volume and read pretty often)

I agree that sometimes reading the hiragana and not seeing the Kanji makes it super confusing to figure out what they are talking about, as you have to rely on the context a lot. The beauty of the light novel labels I linked earlier is that all the Kanji is there, but it has furigana in case you need it.

You will notice a lot of people started with Yotsubato. There is a really good reason for this. It has pictures to help context, yes, the content is funny even for adults, but the most important aspect is that it uses a lot of everyday Japanese. The language is really useful. You will encounter it elsewhere, and there are dedicated vocab decks with audo (memrise) just for Yotsubato.

Comb through this thread for supplementary reading, apps, and apps to bolster your reading. People have mentioned wanikani, free samples on Amazon JP, bookmeter, Book Walker, Satori Reader, learnnatively, and more. Just brilliant, thanks everyone!

I am, as I have shared a few times on these hallowed pages, a bit of a collector, particularly when it comes to video games and visual novels. So naturally, when I developed something of a taste for light novels and manga series, I was keen to collect them in physical form also. Except I quickly ran into an issue: I can devour a book (particularly a manga volume) a lot quicker than I can run through a game, and as such, my already limited shelf space filled up pretty quickly.

So, with some birthday money in hand, I splashed the cash and decided to get myself a brand new Kindle Paperwhite. The next day, it was here, and I was immediately convinced that I had made a good decision. This is a thoroughly lovely device for reading on, whether your interests lie in more text-heavy books such as light novels, or visual-centric formats such as manga.

The NHK anime has an unrealistic premise playing out in a plausible manner. The premise is the same as that many other anime and manga like Sundome, Oh my Goddess, Video Girl Ai and I think the first of its kind was a hentai OVA about a sucumbus coming out of a computer or something but I can't remember its name. It is a pretty flimsy uneralistic premise I must admit but the premise is not the show- it is the execution that matters. Welcome to the NHK was originally a light novel by Tatsuhiko Takimoto which was then subsequently adapted into two very different manga and anime adaptations. The premise of the show like in all those shows I have mentioned above is that of a beautiful girl coming to save some loser from himself and his own laziness and lack of initiative. What makes NHK better than all these other shows is that the angel like girl actually has a motive of her own for helping Satou, the protagonist of this show.

We are introduced to the protagonist in all three adaptations with a monologue by protagonist to the home appliances in his one room(8-tatami?) apartment about a conspiracy by the NHK(Japanese Broadcasting Corporation run by the government with TV license fees) to turn Japan's young men into otakus(geeks) by airing anime with cute girls. The conspiracy delusion aspects are poorly explored in all adaptations even though though they make a great way of introducing the main character Satou by showing how delusional he is even though it turns out he doesn't actually believe in the conspiracy himself. The conspiracy also plays a key part in the ending to the point that it kind of feels that the author forgot about the conspiracy but then found a neet way(get it?) to incorporate it in the ending. It was a really good opportunity lost but I admit that if it had done so then it would have bitten more than it can chew and would have had to abandon the otaku documentary.

The ending, well what happens before and after the climax, is what feels the most plausible when the protagonist is forced by hunger to work in construction to earn a living because he wasted every other opportunity and when he settles into this new life and it isn't that devastating, that's when all the delusions and hopes melt in the air which makes it most satisfying. The protagonist's friend who lives next door, Yamazaki, also has a similar arc, and some very interesting lines too, also feels

In many ways NHK is the 'anti-dream' anime showing that what people and especially otakus really desire can't be achieved through success alone but through companionship of some kind. Satou was the happiest when he was fooling around with Yamazaki and Misaki(the main girl) and Satou's childhood friend and Yamazaki finally found peace when they got married(well in the anime and the light novel anyway). The characters in NHK are both funny and sad because it is funny when their outlandish schemes and dreams fail.

The animation of this show is not that good. Characters can sometimes be off model but fortunately this kind of show doesn't require that much animation as it's mostly characters sitting around occasionally being funny and perverted. 152ee80cbc
