The Department of Commerce and Management Studies (DCMS), Andhra University, came into existence in 1934 by offering B.Com. (Hons) programme for the first time in South India. Further in 1957 the DCMS was the first to start the two-year MBA Full-time programme in India and has been producing talented executives for over six decades occupying coveted positions in India and abroad. Prof. K.K. Das , the first Asian to receive DBA from Harvard University, on the invitation of the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and, the then Vice-Chancellor of AU, Dr. V.S. Krishna, joined the University and was instrumental in pioneering Management Education in India. Later, Prof K.V. Sivayya, MBA (Bradley, USA) and Ph.D.(Illinois Tech, USA) was instrumental for the phenomenal growth of the Department of Commerce and Management Studies.
To meet the needs of local executives of the industry, the Department started a three-year MBA (Evening) Programme in 1977 for the first time in the State of Andhra Pradesh. Yet another milestone in the annals of DCMS was reached by offering MBA Programme through Distance Mode in 1998.
The Department started a first of its kind customized in-house Executive MBA Programme in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL)and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). In tune with the needs of the industry and society, DCMS offered one-year PG Diploma in Taxation, PG Diplomas in Accounting Software, Human Resource Management& Industrial Harmony, International Business and Transport Management. Further, in collaboration with S&P Capital IQ, a fully industry-sponsored two-year MFC (Master of Finance and Control) was started in 2009.In response to the growing need for manpower in retail sector two-year MBA Retail Management programme was launched in 2006. In collaboration with the Andhra Bank, as part of MoU, DCMS started offering two-year MBA (Banking and Financial Services) programme in 2013. In the year 2017 when GST was introduced by the Indian Government, short term certificate course on GST was offered for the first time in India. The department conducts reviews on State and Central government budgets every year.
In order to further strengthen the management programmes, in the year 2021 the Department of HRM (Human Resource Management)was brought into the fold of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies.
In all, the Department has on its rolls over 800students and 200 research scholars Full-Time, Part-Time and Executive Category put together. Foreign students are joining into the popular programmes of the department and also pursuing Ph.D. programme
