Ernest Clixby was born 23 July 1897. He was baptised in Tinsley, Rotherham on 15 August 1897, the son of William and Clara Clixby. His parents were married in 1894 in Sheffield, William Clixby was married to Clara Hemmingfield.
In 1901, Ernest Clixby is aged 3 years, living with his parents William, a Coal Miner Hewer, aged 29, and Clara, aged 27. Also siblings John, aged 8, and George W. aged 1. The family are living at number 2 Peacock Row, Shepcote Lane, Tinsley, Rotherham. (Elder brother John was actually called John Norris Hemmingfield, he was baptised on 12 July 1893 in Carbrook, Sheffield, son of Clara Hemmingfield.)
In 1911, Ernest Clixby is aged 13 with parents William, a Coal Miner Hewer aged 39, and Clara aged 37. Also (half brother) John Norris Hemmingfield, a Coal Miner Trammer aged 18, brother George Walter Clixby aged 11, sister Florence Mary Clixby aged 8, and sister Selina Clixby aged 3. The family are living at number 9 Thomson Street, Kilnhurst, Rotherham. (On Find my Past, all the children have been wrongly transcribed with the surname Hemmingfield).
In 1915 both Ernest Clixby and his brother John Hemmingfield enlisted in the Leicestershire regiment. Ernest's service number was 13393, and John's was 13388.
In August 1916, Corporal, Acting Sergeant 13393, E. Clixby, 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. was awarded the Military Medal.
From the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Wednesday 7th November 1917:
“Sergeant Ernest Clixby, Leicestershire Regiment, of 20 Leicester Road, Dinnington, has gained the Military Medal. He has seen 2 years' active service, and has been wounded. He is only 21 years of age.”
From a report – Clearing Station France, January 6th 1918: “13388 Hemmingfield J. 7th leicesters. Gun Shot Wound. Back.”
From the Sheffield daily Telegraph, 23 February 1918: “Died 23 January 1918, from wounds received in action, Corporal J. Hemmingfield, age 25 years.”

In 1921, Ernest Clixby is a Coal Miner Student, aged 23 years 11 months, working at Dinnington Main Colliery. He is with parents William and Clara Clixby, and siblings George Walter Clixby, Coal Miner Hewer aged 21 years 6 months. Florence Clixby aged 19 years 1 month; and Selina Clixby aged 14 years 1 month. The family are living at 19 Leicester Road, Dinnington.
