By 1911, John William and Emily Thorpe are with their children: James Walter aged 11, John William aged 7, Bertha Irene aged 4, and Lavinia May aged 1 year. The family are living at 51 Marshall Terrace, Stanton Hill, Nottinghamshire.
In 1921, The family have moved to Yorkshire. John William Thorpe (senior), is a 44 years old Coal Miner at Maltby Main Colliery, and wife Emily is aged 41. They are with their children: James Walter 21, Coal Miner at Maltby Main Colliery, John William 18, Rope Hand at Maltby Main Colliery, Bertha Irene aged 14, Lavinia May aged 11, William aged 8, Gladys Hilda aged 3, and Eric aged 1 year. On Wednesday 28 March 1922, 18 years old John William Thorpe suffered a serious accident at Maltby Main Colliery. He was taken to Rotherham Hospital where he died the next day. The inquest was held on Saturday 1st April at Rotherham, and his death was registered in June quarter 1922 in Rotherham.
