William's parents Joel Oliver aged 31 and Mary Coates aged 27, had married on 21 August 1879 at Castleford, Yorkshire.

In 1891, William Oliver is 10 years old, with his parents Joel and Mary and siblings: Arthur aged 7, and Edith aged 2 years. The family are living at Acton, Normanton, Yorkshire.

By 1901, William Oliver is a 20 years old Shunter at a Colliery (below), with parents Joel and Mary and his brother Arthur, who is a 17 years old Pony Driver in a Coal Mine (below). Also in 1901, William's future wife Alice Bywater is with her parents Robert and Mary Bywater, and siblings: John aged 24, Joseph 20, and Fred aged 14. The family are living at 31 Carlton Street, Normanton.

William Oliver and Alice Bywater, were married in September quarter 1907 in the district of Wakefield, Yorkshire.

By the 1911 census, William Oliver is a 30 years old Coal miner Hewer, with wife Alice aged 26, son Frederick William aged 2, and William's widowed father Joel Oliver aged 63. They are living at 20 Granville Street, Normanton.

On Monday 21 December 1919, William Oliver was accidentally killed by a fall of roof at Maltby Main Colliery. His death was registered in December 1919 at Doncaster.
