Below you can read quick summaries of my guiding philosophies in both student affairs work.
-Michael Bliss
Reflecting upon what guides my practice working with students, there was a rush of theories and current feelings that I’m experiencing as I work with students here at Shippensburg University. The feeling of vulnerability, the joy of guiding students towards perspective, self-advocacy, and assisting in their overall development and success. But as I pondered what guides my practice, I found it’s aligned with what guides me; it’s understanding the culmination of all my experience and life factors and how it shaped who I am, not as a student, but as a human. I am my support system, city, generation, neighborhood, connections, and responsibilities. That, but more importantly how I perceive these life factors, connections, and experiences. Each student who walks into my office brings their entire life story and journey with them. As a student affairs professional, you have the unique opportunity to assist students in making sense of their journey, support them in shaping where they go next, and more importantly, how to make sense of what comes their way. My goal as I advance in my professional career is to never forget who inspired me, the experiences that shaped me, and my commitment to students.
