Drive 1.5 hours (55 miles) from Langdale/Gibsons to our Malibu Landing dock property.

Board the boat we have you scheduled on - Malibu Princess or a water taxi - to bring you to camp!
Applying for a Work Permit
All interns who do not have Canadian citizenship will need a work permit.
What you'll need to apply:
If flying: Passport
If driving: Passport or Passport Card
Immigration packet printed in color (this will be emailed to you by the Intern Coordinator in April)
Upon arrival at a Canadian airport or land border crossing, when you get to the Border Agent ask to apply for a work permit.
You will be sent to the Immigration wait room.
When your name is called, give them the packet emailed to you by the Intern Coordinator. The work permit process can take 30 min to 3 hours, depends on the day and traffic at that Port of Entry. Typically, the earlier in the day you arrive to Immigration the lesser the wait.
Have a credit/debit card ready to pay the $155 CAD permit fee. Save the receipt and you can get reimbursed once at camp.
Double check the work permit for spelling or date errors - and if all good then head on your way!
Travel Cost
Travel costs to get to and from Egmont, BC are the intern's responsibility. Malibu covers the boat cost to get you from the Landing to camp!
ACCOMMODATION
Intern House - Tilikum "Tilly"
Interns live in a 6 bedroom house that accommodates 26 people (3-5 people per room on bunk beds). This photo shows the view from there! There are separate male and female halls, each with its own washroom. The intern community will also be responsible for cleaning and caring for their housing throughout their stay.
There is a fully furnished kitchen and living room. Interns are welcome to store personal and community food in the kitchen and can cook for themselves whenever they like. This living room has a cozy wood fireplace and will be home to lots of amazing community time and memories for your intern family. There are several games and books for interns to use and share as well.
Room & Board
Interns will be charged a monthly room & board rate of $400 USD in accordance with Young Life standards. This will come out of your paycheck.
Laundry
There are 2 sets of laundry machines in Tilikum and 2 more in the Chinook laundry room under the gym. Interns are welcome to use any of these whenever they like for doing their laundry. You'll need to bring your own detergent.
Linens
Malibu has bedding & towels available to interns for use. You are welcome to pack your own if you prefer.
LIFE AT CAMP
Intern Bible Study
We will have an all intern/staff bible study once a week - a sweet time of fellowship!
Intern Fun Night
A few times a month a staff member will plan a surprise intern fun night activity...get excited! These are often some of the best memories of the summer.
Team Devotions
Each department has a different rhythm to this - but all do weekly devotions with their department team.
What can I do when camp is happening?
During camper free times you can use the pool, visit retail stores, hang out on the docks, and anything else that doesn't distract campers! You can also observe camper events throughout the week when you are off work if you desire (program events, club, Real Life).
Note that when camp is in session, we don't want to take away from any camper's experience, so staff/interns will hold off on things like wakeboarding, paddle boarding, an all-intern volleyball game, going on Ropes rides, etc., but we will aim to incorporate these into Intern Fun Nights and days with no campers on property.
Retail Stores Tab
If you want a tab at the retail stores, you can preload one here or load one at camp.
Gym/Running Trail
Camp has a small weight room and full court gym for your use. The main place to run is the path from Camp to the Outer Dock - it's a 1/2 mile so one lap is a mile run.
Days Off! (You'll get 1 day off per week)
On your days off, you and the other staff/interns who are off may have the opportunity to take a boat and go hiking, see waterfalls, or relax on a beach away from camp. You'll need a licensed boat driver for your trip. See below.
Many folks will also use days off for solitude time to refresh or grab a coffee with a friend. There are lots of ways to have a great day off.
Boating License
If you want to drive a boat for a day off adventure, you'll need your Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
Take the course here! Or if you have a US Boat License, you can reach out to the course provider in the previous link and see if they will honor your license and issue you a Canadian one.
Use camp's address as your address when getting the card: 6545 Maple Road, Egmont, BC V0N 1N0
Meals
For most of your internship, meals will be provided. When camp is not in session there may be adjustments to that schedule and you'll need to cook on your own. We will work to make sure you have access to groceries when that occurs. Talk with the Intern Coordinator if you have questions about this.
You will be assigned either Work Staff or Camper meal times by your supervisor - you'll need to stick to attending these meals as the kitchen will be planning for that.
Special Diets
Any special diets can be reported on your Health Form.
Amazon Prime/Sysco
Camp has an amazon.ca Prime account that you may order from. Shipping usually takes 1-2 weeks then the items will come in on the next scheduled boat.
You can also change the country on your US Prime account to Canada and use your own Amazon.
You can also order through our commercial food provider Sysco, details on this in arrival orientation.
Health Care & Prescriptions
See the important section below about Canadian health care. You'll want to get enough of any prescriptions before coming to last you the whole internship. The Intern Coordinator can write a letter for your health care provider explaining the circumstances if needed.
Leaving Camp
One unique thing about interning at Malibu is your days off will be spent at camp rather than driving into a town! However, situations arise where staff/interns need to go to town and your supervisor or the Intern Coordinator will assist with planning for this.
HEALTH CARE IN CANADA
IMPORTANT - Please contact your US health insurance company to see if you have international health coverage in Canada already, and if not you should consider purchasing it!
You might be wondering what happens if you need medical attention during the summer? There will be a doctor or nurse at camp each time a camp is in that you can see at no cost.
Should you need medical care off property (beyond the scope of the providers on site) you'll head back on a water taxi to the local clinic in Madeira Park, BC or hospital in Sechelt, BC. We will arrange transportation and send a buddy with you.
Many people think Canadian medical care is "free" but it actually does cost for US residents. Clinics & hospitals here don't accept US medical insurance, but don't worry! You'll just have to pay for the services up front (by credit card) then if you have international health coverage from your insurance company you submit those bills to them for reimbursement.
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFO FOR CAMP
You may leave the camp number and email with those who may need to contact you in the case of an emergency,
(778) 331-7944 and malibuclub@malibu.younglife.org
WI-FI, MAIL, AND PHONE USE
Due to Malibu's remote nature, the only forms of communication are through satellite internet and phone. There is no cell service at camp - a great opportunity to live life a bit more unplugged!
Wi-Fi
You'll have access to Starlink Wi-Fi for phones & laptops. It's available in a lounge near the office for your use. Note that it can occasionally be unreliable due to weather, satellite interferences, or too many users (A Team/Adult Guests use it too) - but is for the most part great!
Phone
Though there is no cell service at Malibu, some cell phone plans allow Wi-Fi calling (many of our staff use this). Check with your carrier to see if this is an option for you if needed - this would be useful for things like SMS texting (verification codes) and phone calls that typically function off cell service not Wi-Fi. The Malibu satellite phone may be used in an emergency. You can also call over Wi-Fi on FaceTime Audio, Whats App, and various other apps.
Mail
Encourage family/friends to send you mail!
Mail & packages can take 2-6 weeks to get to Malibu. Remind anyone sending you a package from the US to discuss with the post office what Customs forms to fill out and duty they need to pay, as we don't want your package turned around at the border for missing these pieces!
