PLANNING FOR CAMP
YOUR TRAVEL
Malibu Club is accessible only by water and there are no roads for about 50 km.
The Camp Office staff will communicate travel details for timing of when to be on the Sunshine Coast and what time boats depart. We will send emails along the way to keep you in the loop.
The Directions to Malibu site can assist first-timers in getting a handle on the route to camp and all the steps involved.
Travelling by Boat
After departing the US whether you drive across the border or fly into Vancouver you'll need to make your way to the Horseshoe Bay Terminal for the BC Ferries. This ferry ride is about 40 minutes and if you are driving a vehicle, the car will be with you on this ferry. Once arriving in Langdale you will drive to the Malibu Landing in Egmont, about a 90 minute drive. There you will board a boat sit back and enjoy the scenery and all that the Jervis Inlet has to offer.
Crossing the US - Canada Border
In order to enter Canada and re-enter the US, you will need:
passport, enhanced driver’s license, NEXUS, or passport card
If you are flying into Canada on any flight, will need to have a passport book, not just a card. This applies to children of all ages, even babies.
Stating Purpose of Travel
When crossing the border into Canada, it is very important to use the correct terminology to avoid confusion. Please refer to the email that the Malibu Office will send to you prior to your arrival.
Traveling with Minors
If a child is coming into Canada with only one parent, the absent parent must write a permission letter for the other parent to leave the USA with their child.
If you are still unsure of how to go about tackling your travel plans, contact us with one of us and we'll talk you through the process as well as your best options depending on your home location.
WORK CREW / SUMMER STAFF COORDINATOR/BOSS TRAVEL
You and your Work Crew will meet at the Seattle-Tacoma Int’l Airport (SEA). All Bosses and Coordinators must travel on the buses with their group as you are the "Chaperones" for those groups to cross the border.
The Malibu office has directed the Work Crew & Summer Staff to book their flights to arrive in Seattle before 12 noon. You will meet them at Baggage Claim near Carousel #16. Coordinators will receive a list of all arrival flight numbers. Kids who are being dropped off in the area are also directed to meet at the same location of Carousel #16 by 12:00 PM.
The Camp Office has arranged for a charter bus to bring your team up to Egmont. Everyone should briung a bagged supper for the trip or plan to buy dinner on the BC Ferry. For the trip in, you will spend the night at the Egmont landing and depart early the next morning for the Malibu Club. On the trip out, you will spend the night at a church near the airport. We recommend that no flights be booked for the day you leave Malibu: all flights should be booked to depart no earlier than 8:00 a.m. the following morning (this has been communicated to the Work Crew & Summer Staff). All Bosses / Coordinators should plan to be around until the entire Work Crew & Summer Staff groups has been delivered to the Airport or been picked up from the church by parents/guardians.
Work Crew must know their job placement before you dock at Malibu.
Be sure to read through the Summer Assignments page sent to each of your Work Crew/Summer Staff by the Malibu Office, it is a wealth of information that will enable you to answer questions participants and parents may ask. If you need clarification on anything, please contact the Camp Office.
The Camp Office will be compiling a complete travel plan for each of your kids that details name, home phone, airline, flight number, and arrival time. The Office will email the Work Crew/Summer Staff Coordinators updates periodically to be shared with the Work Crew Bosses as well. Feel free to ask the Camp Office for updates if you haven’t received one for a while.
First in, last out. At least one Boss or Coordinator must arrive before the first kid, and one must stay until the last kid has flown out on the day following your departure from Malibu.
The buses must depart the airport on time. They have been instructed not to make any unscheduled stops. If the bus becomes late, you will miss the last ferry to the Sunshine Coast.
All Work Crew/Summer Staff Bosses/Coordinators must be on the bus with the kids. Coordinators are their legal guardians over the border into Canada and back into the US.
If somebody gets hung up at immigration, the Coordinators on the bus are to phone the Malibu Office at 778-331-7944.
Malibu Club will be responsible for booking a church to sleep in for your trip home near the SeaTac airport. Address and driving directions for the church will be communicated to you by the Administration team at Malibu and available on the Summer Assignments page.
Cancellations: if you hear of anyone who has decided not to come, please be sure to pass this information along to the Camp Office immediately! Malibu maintains a Wait List for Work Crew & Summer Staff. Please do not contact any possible replacements unless you are asked by the Camp Office directly to do so.
TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENTS
Malibu reimburses Assignment Team travel expenses to and from Malibu based on the YL policy available online in Staff Resources, Travel Reimbursement for Summer Assignments Policy (CMP-001). Reimbursement forms are available in Staff Resources, Travel Reimbursements for Camp Summer Assignments (YL-2604).
Mileage is calculated from your home address for the ATeam member and one approved passenger to the Malibu Landing at 6545 Maple Road, Egmont, BC.
Parking in Egmont is free. Additional parking costs incurred throughout your trip are not covered by Camp.
If the amount that Camp reimburses you will not be enough to cover you, any additional expenses can be submitted to the Northwest Divisional office.
HEALTH FORM
Everyone on site at the Malibu Club must have a completed Young Life Health and Consent Release form online. The health form is extremely important and each member of your family must fill one out online.
Information that will assist you in completing the form:
You will need to click “Create an Account” if this is your first time using the Online Health Form.
If you have done an Online Health Form before, then you will sign in with the credentials that you created for yourself the first time. Then you can click "Copy" on a form that is already completed in your "My Forms" list.
Select "Do not have a registrant ID".
You will need to fill one out for every member of your family who will be on property at any point. When you've completed one, you can then go to My Forms at the top right of the page and select the icon that looks like two pieces of paper to copy that completed form.
You can only copy completed forms. You will still need to re-input some items when you copy a form if it is for another individual. Watch the Date of Birth thing, it can be a tricky one.
You will need your YL Area Number to complete it.
Select the camp dates that mirror your session dates
Any fields that you feel are not pertinent to you, leave them blank.
If there is an item that is required that is left blank, it will tell you when you reach the end. Then you can go back and find all the fields that are pink and red and select or fill out the appropriate answers
Pro-Tip!! You can fill out the first portion with your area and guest type, then you can click Submit right away at the bottom of the left. That will make all the required fields pink and red, then you can go back and see what is required.
Do not get a physician’s signature.
Please select Guest Type: Assignment Team for the team member, and Assignment Team Family for any family members
Do NOT print this form. Simply finish it to completion online and we will be able to access it.
If you are having technical difficulties with the online form, you can call the Young Life Help Desk at 877-957-2435 for assistance.
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
If a medical emergency takes place outside of regular Infirmary hours, please contact the camp office for assistance. They will page the doctor for you. If the office is closed, please contact the Camp Manager, or find any Camp Staff member with a radio.
A major injury may require evacuation to hospital. Depending on the seriousness of the situation, this may be by boat or by air ambulance. A decision to evacuate is made in consultation with both Physicians and the Camp Manager. No Assignment Team members will order evacuations, Malibu Staff must be involved in all evacuations orders.
If you or your family is evacuated from the property for medical services in a Canadian medical facility, then you will be charged by the medical facility immediately and payment will be required up front. All receipts can then be submitted to your personal insurance company for reimbursement. Canadian medical facilities are not allowed to bill directly to a US Insurance company so payment will be required at check-in. If the patient returns to camp, you will also be required to pay any additional transportation fees, such as a Water Taxi fee.
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFO FOR CAMP
You may leave the camp number and email with those who may need to contact you in the case of an emergency, (778) 331-7944 and malibuclub@malibu.younglife.org.
LIFE AT CAMP
ACCOMMODATION
Most Assignment Team members will stay in Kanata. Work Crew Bosses may be in Haida with the work crew, or in Kanata. Kanata has laundry facilities, a kids’ playroom with a television and DVD player, kitchen, and Great Room available for all Assignment Team members and their families. Cleaning of Kanata will be done in partnership between the Assignment Team and Malibu’s housekeeping staff. An Assignment Team meeting with all spouses and families will be held within the first full day at camp.
GUESTS
If you would like to have guests visit you while on assignment, the following guidelines are in place:
all requests go through and must be approved by your Camp Director
the charge is $155 CAD per night per person
the charge for travel on pre-arranged Boat Day vessels is $146 CAD
the charge for water taxi charter travel outside Boat Days could cost $675 CAD
housing is only in Kanata, no additional housing is available.
all charges will be by online payment with a credit card, please pay in the office.
LAUNDRY
Malibu provides all linens, pillows, comforters, blankets and towels for you during your stay. The staff will launder towels, sheets and pillowcases weekly. If you need extra towels, including beach towels for use at the pool, or linens, stop by the Linen Nook and our staff will help you out. Please note that all linens from the Kanata lodge must stay in Kanata, they do not go to the Linen Nook for laundering.
The Assignment Team laundry is located in Kanata for Assignment Team members to be able to do their own personal laundry. Please be attentive to your clothes so that others can use the machines without having to move your laundry.
Laundry detergent will be available for your use. We do not stock any fabric softeners or special children’s laundry detergent. If this is important, please be sure to bring a supply with you.
MAIL
Receiving mail from your friends and family while you are at camp is a great highlight. You will want to inform your friends and family before you leave about best practices for sending you packages.
Please note that letter mail can take 2-6 weeks and parcels can take 4-6 weeks to reach camp as we are so remote and in a foreign country. We receive usually 1 mail delivery per week. All mail will be sorted and put in the Assignment Team office for you when it is ready so you can check in the Assignment Team office for it.
All packages sent to you will need to clear customs and may get charged duty. Everything should be marked as “Gift” or “Non-Commercial Goods”. If a package ends up with duty charged on it, the packages will be returned to sender. Anyone with questions as to how to send a package successfully to you should call the camp office at least 6 weeks before you depart from home, (778) 331-7944 and we would love to help them figure out the best way to send you postal love.
All mail sent to you should be addressed like this:
Your Name
Assignment Team #__
c/o The Malibu Club
PO Box 49, 6545 Maple Road
Egmont BC V0N 1N0
Canada
To send mail out from Camp, Canadian stamps for outgoing mail may be purchased in the Office. US postage stamps do not work to send things from Canada to the US.
CAMP COMMUNICATIONS
Communication Infrastructure at Camp
The Malibu Club is very remote and only accessible by boat or float plane. Due to this remote location communication to and from camp is limited.
Please note that cell phones do not work once you have passed the town of Madeira Park on the Sunshine Coast. If your cell phone plan includes wifi calling/texting, then it could work while at camp in specific areas, but cell phones will not work without wifi calling enabled on your regular phone plan.
Summer Staff and Work Crew will not have any access to the Internet while at Malibu.
MEALS & FOOD
MEALS
It is up to the Camp Director to determine when and where Assignment Team Families will eat. Families will eat either with Camper Meals, or with Work Crew Meals (generally one hour before a Camper Meal). This will be set up week by week, depending on camper numbers.
SPECIAL DIETS
Our goal is to feed you and your family well while on assignment at Malibu. Most special diet requests (vegetarian, gluten free, allergies, etc.) can be accommodated and we ask that you indicate your dietary needs on your health form so that we are prepared to serve you.
THE KANATA KITCHEN
Please designate one Assignment Team member or spouse to work alongside the kitchen staff to keep your kitchen stocked.
If there are special requests, let the kitchen know by Day 2 in order for requests to be fulfilled on the next boat day. We will do our best to help facilitate. We encourage families to consider building in time to shop for special food between the US border and Egmont. Do not bring any fruits, vegetables or meat across the border.
HEALTH CARE
Malibu is Young Life’s most remote camp. There will be one medical volunteer each week to provide medical care for staff and guests. A small clinic is located on the property to handle minor injuries. The camp doctors hold regular office hours daily for 30 minutes following each meal. A small supply of bandages is available on the doorpost of the infirmary for minor scrapes and cuts.
Since you will be in a different country, any US medical insurance will not be able to be direct billed at Canadian medical facilities. If something were to happen and you needed to leave Malibu for required medical assistance at a hospital or clinic in Canada, you will need to pay for the services up-front and then submit those bills to your insurance company for reimbursement (which, if you're YL Staff will be through the YL Benefits department).
If you are not on YL Health Benefits as a YL staff member, please contact your insurance company if you have questions about what your insurance will cover outside of your home country. It is highly advisable to get travel insurance anytime you leave your home country, check with your insurance company to see if you are already covered for international travel or whether you need extra coverage.
STORES
Stores
There are four retail areas in the main part of camp. Since Malibu Club is only accessible by boat, there aren't options to pop into town and gather more supplies. You'll need to bring everything with you.
The Trader is our clothing and gift shop
The Inn is our ice cream parlour and snack shop
Hamilton's is our coffee shop
The Bead Hut is our crafts and beads shop
All major credit cards are accepted in all areas of camp.
All full time Young Life Staff receive a 20% discount in the store for all purchases (except sale items). Please be sure to inform the Totem Trader Staff that you are on full time Young Life Staff before they ring in your sale! Please speak with the store buyer about specific requests.
Assigned Staff are invited to set up an account at the Totem Inn & Hamilton’s. If you have children who will be accessing your account, please tell them how to use it and set up guidelines for use if you have children that you’d like to have limits for. Feel free to connect with the Concessions Intern or Retail Manager if you need assistance.
WHAT TO BRING
Clothing
The weather at Malibu will fluctuate between rain and sun. Bring clothes that can be layered easily. You will have laundry facilities that you can sign up for so you don’t need to bring a month’s worth, you should be fine with 4-7 days’ worth that you can rotate through. Warm clothes that can be easily laundered are suggested, as kids can get pretty dirty playing outside at Malibu! All bedding and towels will be provided. Here are some ideas to start your packing list:
Fleece or sweatshirts that can be thrown on as a top layer
Rain-gear
Bathing suits
Shorts
Sturdy shoes
Beach shoes for down at the pool
If you have a little one in diapers, please bring enough disposable diapers to last through your assignment.
The boardwalks can seem to stretch on forever if you are carrying a tired toddler in or out of camp. A portable stroller or backpack is a good idea, camp has a limited supply to loan. A baby monitor might also come in handy.
Enough formula to last your session.
Food
There will be various snacks kept in the Kanata refrigerator for your use. Please bring up any favourite snack items for your kids and enough formula to last through your assignment. You may also want to bring up your own favourite tea and mug!
Please refer to the Summer Assignment Team Special Food Request Policy in the Assignment Team General Information Manual for specifics on what can be provided by the Camp Kitchen for meals.
NAME TAGS
The Camp Office will produce nametags for everyone and families that should be ready upon arrival at Camp. Every person on assignment will be asked to wear their buttons all the time. Lanyards make this much easier. ¼” rope makes a great lanyard.
Many Coordinators choose to bring a 3’ length for each of their group.
CAMP OFFICE
The camp office is open daily generally from after Work Staff Breakfast up to Camper Dinner. If you require entrance to the Office or Linen Nook after-hours please contact Guest Services, or your Camp Director if it’s past the cabin horn.
SERVICES PROVIDED DURING OFFICE HOURS
Health Forms are filed on Day 1. Head Leaders can request to see the Health Form of a Camper or Leader if there is a specific issue that might need to be addressed (ex. whether the individual is taking their meds as prescribed, making a Red Card call, determining home health)
Housing list is compiled, you can retrieve it from the Office on Day 1
Weekly schedules are published and distributed by the Admin Intern on Day 1
Doctor can be paged in case of emergency
Items can be printed off and photocopying done. The paper resources and storage space are limited at Malibu so please try to have copies made of necessary documents prior to your arrival at camp.
General office supplies can be borrowed (highlighters, golf pencils, dry erase markers). Please note that due to the remoteness of Malibu, some specialty supplies are not readily available.
FAMILIES AT CAMP
We hope that your stay at Malibu will be a fun and exciting time for you and your family as you serve campers and leaders. For many Staff Families, an assignment at Malibu is one that they remember for years and years to come. Because of the remote nature of the Malibu Club, a little extra preparation ahead of time might be required ahead of arrival.
There are no stores, and supplies ordered in can take 1-4 weeks to reach camp, so if you run out of vital supplies like you won’t be able to just pop out of camp to the local store to fetch some. Please bring everything your family might need for the duration of your assignment with you.
FAMILY TRANSPORTATION
Your Camp Director will be communicating departure dates & times with you. Below are some ideas for the drive and for the boat rides up to camp and back. Depending on the boat you are assigned to, the ride can take up to 3 hours.
Some suggestions from other families of helpful things to bring along on your travels:
lunch and snacks
books, maybe a small chapter book that an adult or teenager could read aloud to entertain a group of little ones on a boat board books for toddlers
colouring box
printed off travel bingo, scavenger hunt, “car” trip games (you could adjust these from the car to the boat “Hey Seagull”), or I spy sheets
small white board and markers for hangman, bingo, or just doodling what they see out the window
mad libs, or sticker/activity books – some dollar stores have loads of types
portable games like headbandz, spot-it, anything magnetized
small crafts like string bracelets, finger knitting, stickers stories
postcards to write during the journey and send home as soon as you arrive at camp

Activities
Please bring whatever you need to help your kids adjust to life at Malibu.
Some ideas to get you excited about being here:
There is a small playground beside Kanata that is just for the Assignment Team.
There is a small playroom in Kanata with puppets, books, a few games, and a TV.
The pool is open during Free Time for your family to use alongside the Campers.
Praying as a family, or a whole A-Team Families community. The power of prayer when spoken through the mouths of children is a strong weapon in the Kingdom of God.
Ask Program for behind the scenes ways your kids can help, like delivering costumes or props, helping to tidy up after an event, cheering at any events, and Tableau.
Go for nature walks and explore the beach or golf course.
Find lost Frisbees in the bushes of the golf course.
Scavenger hunts
Board games
Offer to help in the Linen Nook with folding or Housekeeping jobs your kids are capable of
Feel free to ask the Malibu Staff families what they do with their kids if you like.
FAMILY LIFE AT MALIBU
CRIBS AND HIGH CHAIRS
Malibu has a supply of cribs and highchairs for your use. If there are a large number of infants on your team, you may wish to contact the Guest Services Manager in advance to see if there is an adequate supply available.
MEALS
It is up to the Camp Director to determine when and where Assignment Team Families will eat. Families will eat either at Camper Meal, or an hour before with the Work Staff. This will be set up week by week, depending on camper numbers.
THE KITCHEN
The kitchen is a busy spot putting out 3 meals a day to roughly 400 people. A few guidelines to observe:
BC Public Health law restricts the kitchen to ‘Employees Only’. Please do not cut through the kitchen for any reason.
Hot ovens, boiling water, slippery floors, and fast moving staff all contribute to making this area a very dangerous area for kids so please instruct your children not to go in the kitchen for their own safety.
Please designate one Assignment Team member or spouse to work alongside the kitchen staff/camp manager to keep your kitchen stocked.
CHILDCARE DURING SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS
Assignment Team members who come to camp without a spouse may bring a choose to bring a child care provider to help with watching their younger children during their stay. Please let both the Camp Director and our Malibu Office know if you are bringing an additional person so they can be included in transportation numbers and housing.
If you and your spouse are at Camp at the same time and have not both been assigned a standard Assignment Team role by the Division, and you have aa child care provider to help, you will be charged a fee according to the YL Childcare policy.
RIDES
You will have an opportunity to do the rides at Malibu. Your Camp Director will inform you of the schedule. . Please be sure to follow the guidelines listed below:
Ropes Course
Your Camp Director will have information on possible participation times for your family. Harnesses must fit participants properly. There is a minimum weight restriction of 75 lbs on the ropes course. Closed toe shoes MUST be worn.
Ski Boats
(Wakeboards, Water Skis, Banana Boat, etc.): Special Assignment Team times will be set up during your assignment. It is up to your Camp Director to set these up with the Guest Services Manager.
Hikes
Hikes to Inspiration Point are scheduled events. Feel free to join in at any of the times listed on the schedule. Climbs are limited to the first 30 people.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY ANYONE HIKE TO INSPIRATION POINT UNLESS PART OF AN ORGANIZED CLIMB! Head leaders are responsible for scheduling trips.
SPORTS EQUIPMENT
Please feel free to use any of the equipment available to the guests. Please do not hold onto items for the duration of your Assignment, return it promptly after you have finished using it so that Campers will be able to enjoy them.
SWIMMING POOL
The pool at Malibu is fun for kids of all ages! The pool is open during Free Time when the lifeguard is on duty. You are responsible for active supervision and care for your children at all times in and around the pool. Lifejackets are available upon request.

The program costume room is intended to be available only for the Program Team. Please bring costumes for your children to dress up for Tableau.
We look forward to being with you this summer. Please feel free to reach out by email below if you have more questions about your time at Malibu that we haven't addressed above.
