Happening every January, the Quadrantid (QUA) Meteor Shower is one of the best meteor showers of the year, producing over 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. The peak is short and intense, lasting only about 6 hours.
However, Malaysia's location near the equator means we might see fewer meteors compared to regions at higher latitudes because the radiant is located far in the northern sky.
Even so, this shower offers a beautiful and memorable start to the new year 2025!
Best time to watch in Malaysia (2025)
Night of January 3 - 4, the whole night.
Peak activity: Expected at 11:00 PM (MYT) on January 3.
Where to look while observing?
Meteors will radiate from the northern sky, near the tail of the Big Dipper and the bright star Arcturus, but they can appear anywhere in the sky.
Why are the skies perfect for viewing meteors?
A crescent moon will set early, leaving dark skies perfect for viewing meteors.
Fun fact:
The Quadrantids are named after an old constellation, Quadrans Muralis, which no longer appears on modern star maps!
