Director J. Sasikumar, commissioned Raveendran to compose the music for Choola (1979). The song "Tharake Mizhiyithalil Kannerumayi ...", sung by Yesudas, became a hit. Ever since, Raveendran led Malayalam film music with several hit songs.

Melody incorporated with the aspects of Carnatic music were the hallmark of his songs. He successfully composed melodies based on Hindustani ragas also. In 1981 he composed songs and background score for the movie Thenum Vayambum directed by Asok kumar. All songs including "Thenum vayambum", "Ottakkambi nadham" and "Manasoru kovil" became superhits. With the release of Thenum Vayambum (1981), Raveendran made his mark in the film field. In the same year he composed music and background score for the movie Chiriyo Chiri directed by Balachandramenon. The song "Ezhu swarangalum" from the movie Chiriyo Chiri is considered as a pathbreaking semi classical song in Malayalam. In 1982, for his close friend, director P. Venu he dubbed for actor Shankar in his film Aranjyanam and later composed music for his movie Thacholi Thankappan.

A few of Raveendran's best songs were in films like Thenum Vayambum, Chiriyo Chiri, Sukhamo Devi, Aattakalasam, Yuvajanotsavam, Amaram, His Highness Abdullah, Kamaladalam, Kizhakkunarum Pakshi, Champakulam Thachan, Dhanam, Aayirappara, Kalippattam, Ayal Kadha Ezhuthukayanu, Nandanam, Rajashilpi, Bharatham and Aaraam Thampuran. The songs "Pramadhavanam Veendum" from the movie His Highness Abdullah and "Harimuraleeravam" from Aaraam Thampuran were among the most adored songs of that time. He shared a close relationship with the actor Mohanlal. He also composed songs and background score for 8 Tamil films like Hemavin kadhalargal, Rasigan Oru Rasigai, Kanmaniye pesu, Dharma devathai, Pottu vacha neram, Lakshmi vandhachu, Thaye nee thunai and Malare kurinji malare. Almost all major lyricists of his era penned lyrics for his songs, like O. N. V. Kurup, Sreekumaran Thampi, Bichu Thirumala, Poovachal Khader, Chunakkara Ramankutty, Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, Gireesh Puthenchery, Shibu Chakravarthy, etc. Most of his songs were sung by K. J. Yesudas and K. S. Chithra.

Some of his light music albums and devotional albums, which were most popular in the 1980s and 1990s through All India Radio and audio cassettes were Tharanginiyude Ulsava Gaanangal (festival songs) (1983, 1985), Vasantha Geethangal (1984), Ponnona Tharangini (1992), Amme Saranam Devi Saranam (1994), Sarana Theertham (1997) and Uthradapoonilave (2001). Raveendran did orchestration for Deepam Makaradeepam (1980) composed by BichuThirumala.

He was married to Shobha and has three sons. His youngest son, Naveen Madhav, is a playback singer in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film and twin sons Rajan Madhav, a film director, and Sajan Madhav, a music composer in Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil films. Yakshiyum njanum was the debut movie of Sajan Madhav as composer in Malayalam. Earlier he composed orchestration for the songs of Kalabham and also helped in orchestration of many songs composed by Raveendran.

He started his career as a playback singer for the 1969 movie Velliyazhcha for which the songs were composed by M. S. Baburaj. His first song was titled "Parvana rajanithan". For a decade, he struggled to get songs and even become a dubbing artist for films. He dubbed for actor Shankar in the movie Aranjaanam directed by P. Venu. As a music director, he sang some of his songs. In 1978 Raveendran sung a song (sandhya vandana geethikaluyarum sanyasikalude asramavadam) with Yesudas in the movie "AVAKASAM" directed by A B Raj.(Then he was called as kulathuppuzha Ravi) Music direction by M K Arjunan and Lyrics by Gopi Kottarappat.

His first work in the film industry was the film Eenam, for which he set the background score. He also composed additional background music for the film Aaravam (1979) in which he also played the role of a fiddle player, however Kathodu Kathoram (1985), directed by Bharathan is considered as his debut. Ouseppachan's work was noted for the film and three songs from the film became super hits. These songs were noted also for the immense use of violin. This may be attributed to the facts that Ousephachan himself is a violinist and that the protagonist of the film played by Mammootty is also a violinist.[2]

Ousephachan then went on to compose music for over 120 films.[3] He also composed songs for the non-commercial Hindi film Freaky Chakra, directed by V.K. Prakash and background scores for various other Hindi films, notably directed by Priyadarshan. His non-film songs include popular albums like Onapoothalam, Vasanthageetangal and many Christian devotional songs. Aside from music direction, he had taken up a spot as a judge for Asianet's Idea Star Singer 2008 and also as a judge for Kairali TV's Gandharva Sangeetham 2012.[4] He got his first state award in 1987 for the movie Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam. His first national award was for ace director Shyamaprasad's Ore Kadal in 2007. All the songs in this film are composed in Shubhapantuvarali raga but all have their identity. Apparently, it is a challenge given to Ouseppachan by the director and he took up the challenge. His recent notable films are Ayalum Njanum Thammil, Nadan. For Nadan, he recreated the classical drama songs from the classical K.P.A.C era. He received a state award for this film for Best Music Director. Acclaimed music composers like A. R. Rahman, Vidyasagar, Harris Jayaraj, Gopi Sunder etc., has assisted him in various stages of his career and playback singer Franco Simon is his nephew.

Vadakkumnadhan (Lord Shiva) is a 2006 Indian Malayalam-language psychological drama film directed by Shajoon Kariyal and written by Gireesh Puthenchery. It stars Mohanlal as Iringannoor Bharatha Pisharody, a university professor diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, the film also features Padmapriya and Kavya Madhavan. The film's songs were composed by Raveendran, while Ouseppachan provided the background score.[1][2]

I was today years old when I realised that the stud-muffin from this song (Sanjay Mitra) is the same person to play Rishyashringan in Vaishali and Aaromalunni in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. But these hits, the film's big budget or Laxmikant Pyarelal's great songs didn't help make this man our next Rahman. The great musical duo's only Malayalam album was a blockbuster, with this song being inescapably catchy. It went viral before going viral was even a thing, with its YouTube video amassing 10 million views even 23 years after release.

Among KS Chitra's best songs is this soulful number from a 'small' film called Kattu Vannu Vilichapol, which dealt with the ostracism a woman faces after she elopes with a man from an oppressed caste. Composed by MG Radhakrishnan, the song is a time machine in its ability to take you back to the 90s when Chitrageetham on DD4 meant party time.

Another great Vidyasagar album from the same year was Jayaraj's Millennium Stars, with most of its songs becoming hits. But this wannabe Colonial-Cousins-Breaking-Up-And-Getting-Back-Together story wasn't really a great way to kickstart Malayalam cinema's new millennium. I mean, Biju Menon with corn beads, really? The songs were a delight with 'Kukku Kukku Theevandi' being a favourite, apart from 'O Mumbai' or 'Parayan Njan Marannu' with that wacky Spanish interlude.

Preeti Jhangiani's character in Mazhavillu may have had the superpower to see her husband at work just by staring at an empty wall but the audience surely struggled to see anything more in this 1999 film apart from the songs. Of these, 'Raavin Nilakaayal' was really special giving us Roja's 'Puthu Vellai Mazhai' feels in Mohan Sitara's inimitable style.

More than one hit song, Mayookham is an album that's great in its entirety, making it impossible to pick one from the great Bombay Ravi's last. The songs are so loved even today that you may have felt a tingle in your stomach when Saiju Kurup gets together with Mamta Mohandas in Forensic. Mayookham's songs that did that for you!

The first list of songs I made for this piece had as many as eight M Jayachandran numbers in it, indicating the man's ease in creating standalone hits that didn't require starpower, big directors or great videos to become popular. 'Pachapanam Thathe' in KJ Yesudas' voice was among his first songs to outperform the film, a list which will perhaps go on to include even the recent Sufiyum Sujatayum.

It's an understatement to call this haunting melody underrated. An addictive song steeped in real pathos, 'Hridayathin Madhupathram' can alter one's mood like only very few songs can, taking us back to memories of that lover who got away.

Adnan Sami's first Malayalam song may have become a joke for his pronunciation, but 'Chaanjadi Adi's' female version by Gayathri had the power to blow us away. One of the great mother-daughter songs, this Ramesh Narayanan composition remains timeless and fresh for its rich orchestration and lullaby-like appeal.

This spectacularly bad musical film about a band and its members had the soul of a B movie. But the songs, by a young Deepak Dev, were grade A right from the word go. With beats that would sit well among groupies of pop bands such as Boyzone and Westlife of the period, the aforementioned dissonance between song and visuals is strongest in this film's tacky music videos.

Directed by Sibi Malayil, Amrutham wasn't a bad film. It gave us a Hindu-Muslim love story set in North Kerala and it also dealt with communal issues we read about even today, but it's the songs that resonated stronger. 'O Sainaba' quickly became a favourite and its popularity became obvious with the number of people who spent good money to make the song their dialer tune. 589ccfa754
