This painting was created as part of the Intercultural Science Art Project at the 2023 Heidelberg Laureate Forum.
It reimagines the famous Drake Hotline Bling meme. In the top right, you'll find references to a Jackson Pollock drip painting, a Mark Rothko colour field painting, and the ring of integers. The bottom right features a book on representation theory by I. Assem, A. Skowroński, and D. Simson, alongside a Rubik’s cube. Throughout the painting, various visual watermarks mimic the aesthetic of internet memes.

Pop Art emerged as a response to the lofty ideals of Abstract Expressionism, with pop artists drawing inspiration from everyday imagery such as advertisements and comic books. In a sense, they made the ‘abstract’ more ‘concrete’.
Do you think memes can be seen as a similarly "lowbrow" source of artistic inspiration?
