Sure, you clean your windows regularly, but what about the blinds and shades that cover them? Well, they need TLC, too-which is why you need to know how to clean them. Whether they are made of vinyl, wood, fabric, or aluminum, window blinds and shades are perfect for keeping a room cool, blocking out light, and providing privacy from the nosy neighbors, but they are also great at collecting dust, pet hair, and other dirt.
But don’t you worry-there is absolutely no need to clean one slat at a time or take the entire thing off the window. All you really need are some simple tools and a few minutes to improve your view.
This article is here to tell you how to clean blinds and shades quickly and easily.
First things first: You will have to gather up all the cleaning supplies to tackle the motorized and banded zebra shades and blinds, including:
- Vacuum cleaner with soft brush attachment
- Microfiber cloths
- Dishwashing liquid
- Warm water
- Baking soda
Start by fully lowering the blinds or shades. Wood and faux wood blinds can be completely closed; the slat of vinyl and aluminum blinds, which often overlap, can be tilted downward but not completely closed. The dual shades for windows can also be completely closed.
For the vertical blinds or shades, hold the bottom in one hand in order to stabilize it. Wipe them off with a microfiber cloth, starting from the top and then working your way down. Wipe in a downward motion or they could come unhooked. You can even use your vacuum cleaner with a soft dusting brush attachment and a low suction setting to remove dust.
For the horizontal ones, the process is exactly the same except that you wipe from side to side. Work from the top slat to the bottom slat so that dust does not fall on areas that you have already cleaned.
Flip the blinds or shades so the other side is facing you and repeat the process with your microfiber cloth or vacuum.
If dusting is not enough, use a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water. In case you have wooden blinds, be careful to not get them too wet.
If your vinyl and aluminum blinds are in the kitchen where they are exposed to grease, residue, or stubborn dust, they may need a deep clean. take them off the window and put them in a bathtub with warm water, dish soap, and a cup of baking soda. Let them soak for about an hour and then rinse with warm water.
