About
Maidenhead Tai Chi Community Group
The purpose of the Maidenhead Tai Chi Community Group is to provide a welcoming space for people to learn and practice Tai Chi, promote physical and mental well-being, foster a sense of community, inclusivity, and mutual support, and encourage the sharing of Tai Chi knowledge and experience in a non-commercial, non-competitive way.
In 2023, a group of friends began practicing Tai Chi together in a public park in Maidenhead. We quickly discovered that Tai Chi is a wonderful form of exercise, especially well-suited to older adults. As word spread, more local residents expressed interest in joining, and our small group steadily grew. Maidenhead Library generously offered us a small indoor space for one hour each week. This allowed us to continue our sessions year-round, and participation continued to increase.
To accommodate growing interest and overcome space limitations, we expanded the class in May 2025 by renting a larger venue and extending practice time at the URC Church in Maidenhead. This move enabled us to welcome more participants and further support physical and mental well-being within the community.
We are fortunate to receive small amounts of funding from the NHS Frimley, Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Council and and The Prince Philip Trust Fund, which allows us to offer Tai Chi classes free of charge to those in the community who are interested.
Our group is also fortunate to have a Tai Chi Master among our members, who serves as a consultant and actively supports our practice. He holds an accredited Tai Chi coaching qualification, having completed a certified course organized by the Hong Kong Tai Chi Promotion Association. Additionally, he earned second place in several group categories at the 6th "Olympic Cup" Hong Kong International Wushu Festival.
Understanding the Essence of Tai Chi
Practicing Yang-style Tai Chi can improve physical health. The essence of Tai Chi encompasses many elements, including body structure, mechanical principles, philosophy, psychology, traditional Chinese medicine acupoint theory, yin-yang theory, and kung fu martial arts principles. Tai Chi emphasizes balancing relaxation and tension, achieving softness externally and internal strength (Qi enrichment), which is its defining characteristic.
