I was playing with a set of those neodymium magnet spheres and noticed a couple of strange behaviors (which I believe are related so I'm only positing a single question) and I was hoping to get an explanation for.
The spinning is just the same effect as for the ice skater spinning faster when he pulls his arms in. Here the distance of the mass around the center of motion is reduced, which leads to an increased angular momentum. Same goes for your balls. If you roll them such that they would miss another, but are within the range in which they can attract each other, they will spin end up in this situation.If you roll them straight into another, they will not rotate.
For the case of rapidly spinning magnet pair, it appears this is 'powered' by gravity via precession of the magnets. I can't find anything else to confirm / refute this though. Anyone care to weigh in?
FRIDAY, Dec. 29, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Tiny, powerful magnetic balls sold exclusively online at Walmart as building blocks and stress relievers have been recalled for swallowing dangers, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) said Thursday.
The magnetic balls have remained in a rosette pattern and are now identified in the terminal ileum. There is no free intraperitoneal air, no bowel obstruction, and persistent fecal loading as per the initial X-rays.
Knowing the potential complications of pressure erosion, perforations, and fistulous tracts caused by magnetic ball ingestion, this child was recalled to the emergency department for reassessment after the abdominal series (done after hours), was formally reported. The intention was to perform an urgent gastroscopy and attempt removal of the ingested magnetic balls and prevent downstream complications thereof. This window period was missed as the balls had already impacted the terminal ileum at a 12-hour duration. At this point, conservative management was considered.
At 32 hour duration, the magnetic balls remained impacted and the child started developing some abdominal complaints. An urgent laparotomy was performed and the magnetic balls were removed surgically.

In August, the agency warned consumers to stop using another magnetic ball set sold online at Walmart.com for about $30. The agency cautioned the public after the product's seller, Guanjia Trade Co. of China, did not respond to the agency's request for a recall.
The commission also noted that the magnetic balls sold at Walmart "do not comply with the requirements of the mandatory federal magnet regulation because the sets contain one or more magnets that fit within CPSC's small parts cylinder and the magnets are stronger than permitted."
