Portrait of Viterbo

December, 2022

An individual art project, created during “Tuscia in Fiore Vernissage” Art Festival in Viterbo.

The aim of this workshop was to create a work strongly related to an Italian city, Viterbo. From the very first moment, I was struck by the medieval architecture of the old town - the abundance of stone bricks and arches which made the air thick with history.

I invited inhabitants, tourists and passers-by to create small collages – each of them became
a brick used to “build” an arch portrait of the city. The collages were made of old newspapers, which I collected from the local bars and restaurants. As a person who does not speak Italian and visited Viterbo for the first time, I wanted to reach for an authenticity of experience by making connections with the people and using a simple yet available local tool – newspapers.
I believe that every city is composed of a wide range of people – both inhabitants and visitors – and seeing Viterbo through their lens allows for obtaining a more complete picture of the place.
