Allegations of lip-syncing on-stage impostors, rumors of health problems, long-since-announced records that never arrive-- what the hell is going on with MF Doom? The villainous mystique routine is an integral part of his personality and all, but when an MC who used to drop great-to-classic albums yearly winds up mostly vanishing save some sporadic guest-spot duty, it's enough to make you nervous and probably a little frustrated. What little he's given us over the last year has been sharp; his verses on the Mighty Underdogs' "Gun Fight", J Dilla's "Mash's Revenge", and the "Strange Version" remix of Heliocentrics' "Distant Star" do more to belie his quasi-hiatus than justify or explain it-- assuming they're not raided from some circa-2004 vaults, anyway. But where's his Ghostface teamup Swift and Changeable? Where's the hinted-at KMD reunion?

And where's the Madvillainy sequel? Because this ain't it. Apparently Madlib got so impatient sitting around waiting for Doom to record some new verses for a followup to their classic 2004 collaboration that he just up and grafted a bunch of new beats to Doom's old verses. That's a risky idea: It's a thankless task to create a completely remixed version of an album that was already borderline-perfect. And no matter how hot the beats get on Madvillainy 2: the Madlib Remix, it's hard to sit back and let everything click into place, not when you've had more than four years to let the original etch itself into your brain.

Now there's no real bad beats on here; many of them, particularly the aforementioned "Borrowed Time" and the jazz fusion of "Strange Ways" revamp "Cant Reform 'Em", are worth copping in their own right no matter how much they tweak your memories, and a number of these tracks would've worked well if they were released on the flipside of a circa-2004 12" as bonus remixes. But over the course of an entire album it feels a bit like the hollow accomplishment of a pointless idea done well. I feel bad panning this: Madlib's definitely one of the most fascinating and reliably creative producers of our time, so I don't really want to do him a disservice here, and I admit that if it wasn't so difficult for me to let go of the idea of Madvillainy's original sound, I'd like this more. But messing around with an album like that is a problematic thing to do, even with the original sonic architect at the boards. It's like watching a version of A Fistful of Dollars starring Lee Marvin instead of Clint Eastwood: he may be every bit as good a leading man, but you can't shake the feeling that it's just not right.

Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix is a remix album by American hip hop duo Madvillain, consisting of rapper MF DOOM and producer/rapper Madlib. The album is a re-working created by Madlib of their 2004 debut album, Madvillainy. It was released via Stones Throw Records in 2008.[5]

On 23 July 2008 Stones Throw announced Madvillainy 2: The Box, a box set containing the Madvillainy 2 CD, the Madvillainy Demo Tape on cassette, Madlib's "One Beer (Drunk Version)" remix on a 7" single, a T-shirt with lyrics from "America's Most Blunted", and a Madvillain comic book continuing the story of the "All Caps" music video.[5]

I have a question about madvillainy 2 the madlib remix because i have listened to it and need some clarification is the album a whole bunch of new songs or are they just remixes of songs off of madvillainy because i cant tell because some of the verses i hear from MF DOOM on that album sound extremely similar to ones on madvillainy but i just cant tell so if someone can help me out that would be amazing thank you and keep jamming on. RIP MF DOOM

Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix was originally released in CD form in Madvillainy 2: The Box (2008) and released only with the box set. White labels of the vinyl have been kicking around for a while, but we finally decided to get it done right. Some might say it's sacrilege to revisit an album like Madvillainy, but Madlib's never been one to respect convention. Like many of his best works, he made this one for himself - headphone listening pleasure before a ten-hour plane ride to Tokyo. But this reworking (we hate to say remix) was so good that after we sat with it for a while, we decided that we had to make it available. The double LP comes for the first time with a cover, with download card, plus the 12-page mini-comic/booklet. The comic, titled "Meanwhile..," is a continuation of the story that began in the "All Caps" video - both by James Reitano. Cover by Jeff Jank, Photos by Eric Coleman. be457b7860
