Artist biography
Holly Newton is a soon-to-be graduate of MacEwan University, and an artist residing in Edmonton, AB. She works primarily as a painter, exploring issues surrounding environmentalism and feminism, but has dabbled in digital work as well.
Artist statement
Holly has always been drawn to nature, a separate entity with which we have a complex relationship. Nature has always been a resource that we, as humans, have abused for our own benefit. But Holly views the environment as equal to humans, and through her work she demands respect for this habitat.
Holly’s work also comments on issues surrounding feminism. As a proud female artist, she strives to highlight issues that women encounter in today’s society. Body image and self-esteem issues, something Holly and many others currently experience, appear as main themes in much of her work. She aims to subtly critique the handling of these issues and the fact that they remain at large.
