Artist statement
I use the act of making as a form of thinking. My works are my way of examining the nature and experiences of living organisms in a complex world. I use an open and intimate approach to explore the relationships between energy and matter, mind and body, and the individual and collective. Through varying degrees of abstraction and visual ambiguity, I strive to soften barriers between genders, species, and states of being to create a space that invites viewers to recognize a sense of shared experience with all things. Because materiality is so important to my practice, I make my three dimensional works primarily with durable textural media such as textiles, found objects, and wood. I like the process of slowly constructing things with my hands. When I am carefully stitching, sculpting, or carving, I can feel a sense of connection to and understanding with my materials. I think of my two dimensional work largely as an extension of my sculptural work, placed in theoretical space instead of physical space.
